My GI Careers UK story- by Anu Prakash

I was asked to provide feedback to GI Careers UK on the services and care that they have provided me before I left India and after I arrived in the UK.

On arriving in the UK I even wrote to the founder of GI Careers UK, Dr Nanda, and told him that I just simply “loved his company” and I would always be an ambassador for his team. He simply told me that I should use objective rather than subjective terms, now that I was entering the world of white collar professionalism.

So why, do I love this company ? If ever I was not happy with the services from GI Careers UK’s Indian team I could just send an e-mail to GI Career’s UK team and they would get back to me within a couple of days at most, many times even sooner. There were many occasions that their local staff could not answer my detailed questions and it was very helpful that the UK team were at hand to help answer those questions based on their years studying & working in the UK.

I even found that the UK team were setting the standards for their Indian staff and were also happy to speak to humble students like me because it enabled them to get feedback on their Indian teams’ performances.

When I arrived in the UK my university accommodation was not available until mid month, but I flew in on 3rd September, so GI Careers UK arranged to put me up with some students for two weeks at minimal cost. Zero stress.

I was even advised by other GIC UK students already in the UK to apply for part-time work right-away, but I preferred to concentrate on my studies/career. So, Dr Nanda arranged for some paid oil & gas work for me from his own engineering consultancy and I was helping him with what the oil & gas industry term “allocation” work, where owners of different fields producing oil & gas via the same top sides facility need to be able to see how much oil & gas being produced together with other fields belongs to them. This enables the revenue to be allocated and taxed correctly. The petroleum revenue tax applicable to each field may be different, so allocation arguments impact revenue share between different fields and the tax take by HMRC. This work involved a lot of very heavy maths regression work to enable various key plant operating parameters to be linked in with oil and gas shrinkage factors.

Dr Nanda is now planning to run programs to expose engineering students to the work of engineers in the Oil & Gas sector utilising engineering case studies. Students like me who are already here are benefiting because he runs the case studies by us so that we can provide beta trial feedback. This is another example of win-wins that are created when we come to study through GI Careers UK. These appear to be significant new weapons in GI Career’s efforts to bring students to study in the UK.

I am absolutely bowled over by their zeal and their care for someone as small as me. My new UK friends tell me that GI Careers UK sound like the “bee’s knees” -always at frenetic work. Perhaps, but for me I just plain love ’em.

When they told me to write something upfront and honest, I did not hesitate to do so.

They blew me away and I know multiple students in Aberdeen who feel the same about them, so I cannot be an isolated case.

GI Careers UK is not just an Education Consultancy but a pilot boat that navigates you through a maze of rocks to a safe haven. They help you in laying a foundation for non stereotypical thinking which always helps in broadening your thinking, which is foremost while you go and hunt for the best colleges outside your country.

I have four hundred e-mails showing through in my six month interface with them.

In a nutshell:-

They helped me chose between two different top schools for my Masters programme. This was a laborious process which even involved me speaking to people they know to help me make a final decision on which one is more suited to help me break into Investment Banking course.

They were pioneers in understanding education as a global product as they were able to discuss UK Education, US education, etc.

They helped me write my SOP, a write up which is considered the most critical document while the application gets scrutinized.

They reviewed & substantially improved my submission for the KC Mahindra Scholarship in India.

They reviewed & substantially improved my submission for the ICMA scholarship at the University of Reading, Henley Business School.

They re-wrote my submission for the Thomas Cook Travel Scholarship, which was a three hundred word submission. They even explained why their re-write was necessary in light of Thomas Cook's marketing jingle.

They advised me when it was appropriate for me to make my case directly to the head of department when I needed them to customize my Master's programme with a research bolt-on.

They always presented an approach that should be made to get traction on a sticky wicket of which I presented many. The run rate did not always improve but they constantly think outside the box to give you cutting edge solutions. e.g. when I suggested that I wanted to raise a loan from a UK bank to finance my education rather than raise one in India at high interest rates, they said that that would not be possible BUT I should consider raising finance for my studies from private investors via certain portals that help facilitate this. This way I may be able to raise finance from a private investors and that would help me pay of my Indian Education loan at the price of sharing some of the future earnings with the investor.

They try to innovate solutions for you using spin bowling. When they could not help me solve a problem that I was facing on a one year time frame; they re-framed the problem on a four year time frame and tried to provide a novel solution for both me and my wife as a professional couple. It did not suit us; but I have kept it in my back pocket as a plan C. Their proposed solution made sense, but not for us.

They advise you on the cleverest footwork that you can possibly follow, but they are not magicians, and you may remain pinned down on your wicket by some clever bowling that life offers you.

They make sure that you make all your strategic decisions optimally but they will leave tactical matters in your hands. They are happy to listen but they do not bear foolish thoughts gladly.

What else would you expect from people, many of whom themselves still work daily as senior consultants for global companies. People who advise corporations are advising you.

Days of their time has gone into helping me with all of the above; and all for free and all with the risk that I may cancel my plans to study abroad.

Anyone reading this testimonial should ask themselves where in the world they can get a service like the one I have described above from seasoned professionals without the need to pay for it. Other Education consultancies may have elegant offices at prestigious addresses but I challenge anyone to find a service which I only described as personal mentoring.
