National Handloom Day
• Celebrated on 7th August every year to honor India’s rich handloom heritage. • Marks the Swadeshi Movement (1905) that promoted indigenous textiles. • Encourages support for local weavers and sustainable fashion.
Cultural Significance • These handlooms are not just textiles but symbols of heritage and livelihood, sustaining thousands of weaving families. • Many of them (Pochampally, Uppada, Venkatagiri, Mangalagiri, Dharmavaram) are GI-certified, ensuring authenticity and protection of traditional craft. • APCO (Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers’ Cooperative Society) plays a major role in preserving and promoting these weaves across both states.
