BRIDGE THE GAP
As they say, “the wise man bridges the gap by laying out the path by means of which he can get from where he wants to go.” And this is precisely what you are expected to do here. Just make sure that you bridge your way to the top. The competition requires you to build a double deck bridge using only Popsicle sticks (ice cream sticks) and fevicol. The team whose bridge satisfies all the scoring criteria which includes strength & serviceability , Aesthetics & questionnaire would win the contest.
CONSTRUCTION DETAILS:
1. Construction of Double Deck Bridge involves sequential construction of the 2 major components: decks and supporting structure.
2. The deck should have a span ranging 560-600 mm c-c + a minimum deck clearance of 30 mm on each side.
3. The width of deck at any length should be b/w 140-160mm. The width can be measured at any section of the bridge.
4. The clearance between two decks should be b/w 120-140 mm.
5. The bridge must have a level, seamlessly constructed roadway. The deck will be subjected to concentrated/moving loads along the deck of the bridge.
6. The height of the entire structure from the base to the top most point of bridge should not exceed 300mm.
MATERIALS:
1. Glue: Only fevicol should be used as Adhesive (Synthetic white adhesive or single component cyano-acrylate adhesive) to build the structure.
2. Use of other adhesives (for eg: M-Seal®, SR etc..) and even tying material like thread may lead to disqualification.
3. Coatings : Structures should not be painted, sprayed or dipped in any coating material. All glue should be removed from surfaces that are not bonded together.
4. Maximum Popsicle Sticks Dimensions to be used :
Length -130 mm
Width -15 mm
Thickness - 2 mm
The Popsicle sticks can be cut or trimmed to any shape or size.
EVENT DESCRIPTION :
Round 1:
• The bridge will be checked by the organizers regarding span, clearance and material constraints.
• The bridge will be weighed & Wooden block of the specified dimensions will be passed through the clearance area of the bridge.
The bridge satisfying all the conditions here will be forwarded to Round 2.
Round 2:
• The deck will be subjected to concentrated load.
• The loads applied will be gradually increased on the trolley placed at center of upper deck of bridge till the failure occurs.
• Efficiency of the bridge will be calculated & based on Strength followed by Servicibility criteria, some of the bridges will be shortlisted to Round 3.
Round 3:
• In this round, bridges will be evaluated based on Aesthetics. The Jury will judge the bridge based on the detail to connections and members, the uniqueness of the design and its overall look.
• Also, a Questionnaire will be conducted in which some questions will be raised by the jury to team regarding the bridge design.
TEAM SPECIFICATIONS AND ELIGIBILITY:
1. A team may consist of a maximum of 3 members.
2. Students from different institutes can also form a team.
3. All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are allowed to participate in the event.
4. The participation fee for the event is 200/-
Judging Criteria:
• The bridge will be scored based on its Efficiency. The efficiency will be calculated as the ratio of Ultimate load capacity / bridge self weight.
However, In Engineering, the best solution may not always be the biggest or strongest bridge.
• The scoring of the structure will be based on strength as well as the serviceability criteria.
• Also, the bridge will also be scored on Aesthetics & Questionnaire.
Scoring criteria :
Deflection at yield (D) = 20%
Efficiency (E) = 50%
Aesthetics (A) = 15%
Questionnaire(Q)=15%
Total Score (S) = D + E + A + Q
Violating any of the conditions mentioned underneath, penalty will be imposed according to the judges and may even lead to disqualification.
PENALTIES:
• Dimensional specifications are not met (Penalty of 10% of the total score)
• Use of material (except the those stated in rules ) (Penalty of 50% of the total score or can lead to disqualification as decided by the judges)
• In case of any discrepancies, the decision taken by the judges will be the final verdict.
CERTIFICATE POLICY:
A certificate of merit will be awarded to the top teams emerging from this competition.
A certificate of participation will be awarded to all the participating teams.
GENERAL RULES:
• Shape: Structure could be of absolutely any shape satisfying the above constraints.
• Once the structure is weighed, you are not allowed to modify your structure in any way.
• If the structure fails to satisfy any of the above constraints then it will be summarily rejected.
• Any team that is not ready at the time specified will be disqualified immediately.
• Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all.
