"My father had no means to fulfil all my ambitions and one of these was to study in England. I was told that if I had Rs. 10,000, I'd be able to manage, but I couldn't expect anybody to give me the money. I realized that if I wanted to go, I would have to earn it myself.
So I studied hard for my law exam, and when I started my practice, I saved as much as I could", this distinguished freedom fighter later recalled, speaking about his dreams to study in England.
After saving up enough, the young lad applied for a passport and booking. His travel documents addressed to 'Mr. V.J. Patel, Pleader, Borsad.' was received by his elder brother who bore the same initials.
'I am older than you,' said the elder to the younger brother. 'Let me go to England.'
With that, the younger brother delayed his dreams and gave his brother the money he had saved for the trip.
Once again, he started saving money. But the death of his wife left him solely responsible for his two children, Mani and Dahya, aged 4 and 3.
Leaving them with their school principal, he finally departed for England to study law in 1910 at the age of 35.
Upon his return, he became one of the most distinguished legal practitioners in Gujarat. But, inspired by Gandhi, he gave up his thriving practice and dedicated his life to the nation.
Involving himself in the peasant struggles of Kheda and Bardoli, he became a satyagrahi in the footsteps of the Mahatma. It was here that his astute organisational capacity and extraordinary leadership skills came to the fore. It was also here that he earned the moniker through which he is famous today: Sardar.
