Book Name: Veronica Decides To Die

Year of Publication: 1998

The renowned Brazilian author of The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho exquisitely succeeds in beautifully etching a morose yet inspiring fictional story of a young lady Veronica. The protagonist is described as a young 24 year old girl, who technically is blessed with all kinds of happiness and ecstatic pleasure that a girl of her age would look forward to. However she juggles between the boundaries of life, death; sanity, madness; happiness and despair. Veronica works in a library in Ljubljana, Slovenia and rents a room in a convent. The void in her mind triggers her to take the extreme step of su***de just to find peace and freedom in an overdose of sleeping pills. However destiny takes a toll ultimately landing her in the purgatory of Villette, the country’s famous asylum. She is told that the su***de attempt weakened her heart and now she just has a few days in the journey of life until she succumbs to death. At this point, Coelho describes and recounts his own youthful incarceration in a Brazilian sanatorium, consigned there by his parents who could not understand his unusual behaviour. This book profusely describes a very sensitive topic of su***de in a very subtle manner. The readers would get to see life in through the eyes of a dying human. It would take you on a ride of discovery rather than blankness or despair. Coelho points out in this novel that a change in perspective no matter how slight or dramatic can often tie a falling person tighter to the thread of life. Its a must read for all those who love philosophy. Happy Reading!
