Spelling Rules...

Because so many parents are schooling virtually or at home this year, we wanted to offer some tips each way for “why?” questions you might receive.

An easy one for beginning readers and spellers is the rule for c, k, ck, and ch.

“Why do they ALL say k?!”

In a CVC word like cat where the vowel is short, so says it’s sound, K takes I and e, and C takes A, O, and U.

So we say cat, cot, cut, but kit and keg.

(C says the S sound when it is in front of short I and short E sound, so we say cell, cinema.)

CK comes at the end of a syllable (like we wear our socks on our feet, not on our head) so we say lock, and ticket.

Ch is the hardest. At this point, it helps to know where words come from. If words are German or Hebrew, ch says the k sound, like ache, chorus, and stomach.

Why does this matter?!

If we struggle to read or spell words, it’s often hard to read and understand what we are reading.
