100 years of Pharmacy

In September 1921 Hope Constance Monica Winch arrived in Sunderland with an ambitious plan to establish the finest pharmacy department in the north-east of England. She started with just three fee-paying students and 25 ex-servicemen in a teaching space equipped with only one double-sided bench.

This year we will be celebrating 100 years by sharing our history, remembering our heroes and hosting events with our alumni – why don’t you come and join our celebrations!

Hope Constance Monica Winch was born in 1894. She was educated at the Clergy Daughters’ School at Casterton and in 1912 went on to spend a year at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, training as a pharmacy dispenser

Undergraduate Foundation Programme (UFP)

This one-year (3 term) programme offers successful students guaranteed progression* to the University of Sunderland. You will study your Foundation programme at our state-of-the-art Centre located at the heart of the University of Sunderland City campus.

This programme is designed to prepare international students, who have completed senior secondary education, for entry to undergraduate studies at the University of Sunderland. All students who successfully complete the UFP are guaranteed placement on a suitable programme of undergraduate study at the University of Sunderland. The UFP is set at level 3, which is equivalent to A-level standard in the UK.

The pathways are: Business, Economics, Finance and Management, Engineering and Sciences, Humanities, Law and Social Sciences and Life Sciences.

Online EAP: Pre-sessional English (Upper Intermediate)

Improve your English and get to the level you need to study your degree with training in academic note-taking, talking in seminars, doing presentations, writing essays and reports, and readings assignments.

This 8-week online course is for people with a 5.5 IELTS score (or equivalent).

You'll improve your English, learning academic skills like listening, note-taking, reading, summarising, writing essays and reports, doing research and making presentations. You'll finish the course with an English level at the University's equivalent of a 6.0 IELTS score.

PGCE Science with Biology Secondary Education

Our Education courses are ranked 2nd in the UK according to The Guardian University league tables 2020. Funding for trainee teachers is better than it’s ever been and you may be eligible for a scholarship or tax-free bursary to help you with your studies.

Science with Biology Secondary Education PGCE will qualify you to teach Biology at Secondary level in any state-maintained school in England and Wales.

'Top-up' a registered nurse qualification to a full honours degree in one year of study. Develop your advanced clinical expertise, theoretical knowledge and professionalism. Enhance skills that allow you to meet a wider range of challenges within the clinical nursing environment.

This course is designed to top-up a registered nursing qualification. You’ll be taught by an enthusiastic team of skilled professionals. All members of the team have at least one specialist area of both clinical and teaching expertise. They are also actively involved in healthcare research and consultancy work.
