India has taken a major step towards deepening economic ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the India–GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA) were officially signed on 5 February 2026 in New Delhi.
✍️ The ToRs were signed by Shri Ajay Bhadoo, India’s Chief Negotiator, and Dr. Raja Al Marzouqi, Chief Negotiator of the GCC, in the presence of Union Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, MoS Jitin Prasada, and Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal.
📈 Why this matters:
• The ToR sets the scope and framework for FTA negotiations
• Aims to ensure predictability, stability, and seamless flow of trade
• Expected to boost investments, jobs, food security, and energy security
💬 Calling it a “force multiplier for global good,” Minister Piyush Goyal said the FTA will take India–GCC relations to greater heights, strengthening already deep economic and strategic ties.
🌐 India–GCC trade snapshot:
💰 $178.56 billion trade in FY 2024–25
📈 15.3% average annual growth over the last 5 years
🌍 15.42% of India’s global trade
📦 Key exports from India:
• Engineering goods
• Rice & textiles
• Machinery
• Gems & jewellery
🛢️ Key imports from GCC:
• Crude oil & LNG
• Petrochemicals
• Gold & precious metals
👥 The GCC region (61.5 million people, $2.3 trillion GDP) is also home to nearly 10 million Indians and has invested over $31 billion in India, making it one of India’s most important economic partners.
🤝 With historic trade ties, strong people-to-people links, and growing strategic cooperation, the India–GCC FTA has the potential to reshape trade across the region.

🇮🇳🇺🇸 INDIA–US $500 BILLION TRADE DEAL: WHAT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING?
The trade announcement by US President Donald Trump marks a FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT — the first stage of a larger India–US trade pact, according to senior government officials.
📄 A joint statement detailing the broad contours of the deal is expected in the next 2–3 days.
After this, talks will move towards a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) that will formally include and expand this framework.
🔍 Key Points Explained:
• The deal is currently a leaders-level understanding, not a final treaty
• The US has announced a rollback of reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18% (from as high as 50%)
• In many cases, Indian exports may also face ZERO duty
• Duties on several American products imported into India are expected to fall to zero
💰 About the $500 Billion Commitment:
• The $500B figure is not annual spending — it is a target over the next 5 years
• It includes existing and upcoming projects
• Major focus areas:
⚡ Energy
🖥️ Data centres (alone needing ~$20B)
🌾 Agriculture
🏗️ Technology & infrastructure
📊 For context:
• India imported $45.33 billion worth of goods from the US in FY25
• The new framework aims to significantly scale this up over time
🇮🇳 PM Modi welcomed the move, saying he was delighted that ‘Made in India’ products will face lower tariffs, calling it a positive step for Indian exports and manufacturing.
🧠 Bottom line:
This is Phase 1, not the final deal. The real impact will depend on how the BTA is negotiated and implemented in the coming months.
💬 Do you see this as a long-term win for India’s trade and manufacturing ambitions?
