Today 17 July is World Day of International Justice. Let's have some food for thought.

What is actually the historic importance of this day?
It marks the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on 17 July 1998, Rome. As legal scholars, professionals, and over all as humanists, we stand united with all those who support equal access to justice, the rule of law and a more humane world. It was ratified by 124 countries after world leaders had increasingly pushed for its creation in the wake of the Yugoslav wars and the Rwandan Genocide.

Having share the above, are you aware of any latest controversial judgement where in the ICC went against a country's President?
Not long back, in 2023, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Commissioner for Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova who were accused of unlawfully deporting Ukrainian children to Russian during Mr Putin's invasion. This had serious repercussions including he was forced to skip a BRICS summit in South Africa the same year, after pressure grew on President Cyril Ramaphosa's government to detain Mr Putin if he arrived in the country. It also impacted the global travel of tourist to Russia since then due to the political instability.

Such is the importance of ICC and is a classic reassurance that even if one holds the world class diplomatic positions a crime is supposed to be dealt likewise to uphold world peace and justice.

Maritime Conference & Publication Opportunity Alert-
