SOC (Security Operations Center) and VAPT (Vulnerability Assessment and Pe*******on Testing) are two essential domains in cybersecurity, each serving distinct purposes.
A SOC is responsible for continuous monitoring and incident response. Analysts in a SOC detect, analyze, and respond to cyber threats in real time using tools like SIEM (e.g., Splunk, QRadar). It’s a defense-centric role focusing on threat detection and mitigation.
VAPT, on the other hand, is offensive security. It involves identifying, analyzing, and exploiting vulnerabilities in systems and applications. VAPT professionals use tools like Burp Suite, Nessus, Nmap, and Metasploit to assess the strength of security controls and simulate real-world attacks.
Requirements to enter SOC:
Knowledge of networking (TCP/IP, OSI model)
Familiarity with SIEM tools
Understanding of malware, phishing, log analysis
Requirements to enter VAPT:
Strong foundation in networking and OS fundamentals
Proficiency in Linux and scripting (Python, Bash)
Hands-on experience with ethical hacking tools
Certifications like CompTIA Security+, CEH, or SOC Analyst/Red Team-specific training help beginners get started in either field. Both roles are high in demand but require different mindsets — SOC for defenders, VAPT for ethical hackers.
