NOTE: There are even options that offer work study programs wherein the University allows the student to work full time even during his classes. Classes are held in the evening or on weekends & the student works full time during the day. These options are particularly good for students with low budgets.

Work Rights

Types of Employment available to F‐1 Students while studying or after studies.

2. Off Campus Employment through (a). Curricular Practical Training (CPT) (b). Optional Practical Training (OPT)



On – Campus Employment:

Can work on campus 20 hrs/week during study time.
Can work full time (i.e. 40 hrs/week) during holidays.
Positions include:
Teaching Assistantship
Research Assistantship
Fellowship
Hourly Employment- Food Services, Library, Event Coordinator, Laboratory Assistant, etc




Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) :

Provides opportunity to gain actual employment experience.
“An integral part of an established curriculum”.
Defined as “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school."
To be eligible for CPT, student must have completed 9 months in lawful status and currently be in F‐1 status.
CPT can be full time (>20 hours week) or part time (20 hours or less per week).


Optional Practical Training (OPT):

Available to students who are lawfully enrolled on a full – time basis &have completed at least 1 full academic year.
Eligible student may request OPT in order to be employed in a position related to the major area of study.
12/29 months of OPT available after each degree level completion
OPT for F‐1 students can occur under 4 circumstances:

(1) During annual vacation & other times when school is not in session (if the student is eligible, and intends to register for the next term or session);

(2) While school is in session provided OPT does not exceed 20 hours a week;

(3)Full‐time after completion of all course requirements for the degree (excluding thesis or the equivalent).

(4) Full‐time after completion of a program.

The first 3 circumstances are referred as “pre‐completion” OPT while the 4th circumstance is called “post‐completion” OPT.

Note:

From 2008, OPT program allows F-1 students to work in US in occupations related to their field of study.
•F-1 visa holders are eligible for 29-month extension if they hold a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).



Summarization of OPT : Students who have pursued technical studies in US get an opportunity to spend additional 29 months in US after their masters. During this 29 months they can work full time on student visa and if the employer sponsor’s H1B they can convert their student visa into work visa. This period of 29 months is reduced to 12 months in case of students who have done management studies in US. This benefit is available under the scheme called Optional Practical Training (OPT).
