We are grateful to have had our second experiential learning (EL-2) experience with the Foundation for Ecological Society in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan. Our team, including Anjali, Bhupender, Venkat, Shruti, and Puneshwar, thoroughly examined a number of aspects of community development and forest management.

Using IFRI and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques, we investigated the close relationship that exists between local communities and forests. Our experience highlighted the importance of sustainable forest governance, from appreciating the vital environmental services to comprehending socio-economic and cultural aspects. Interacting with the community revealed how essential forests are to their way of life and cultural customs, highlighting the significance of efficient resource management. As we disseminate information and encourage community-driven conservation initiatives, our work never stops.

We thank Bibhu Prasad Nayak, Assem Prakash, Sneha Biswas, Soumya Patel, Mahipalsinh for giving us this opportunity, and we look forward to applying these insights to our future ventures.

We are elated to have done our experiencial learning 2 in Raipur, Chhattisgarh with FES in the IFRI framework. It was a great opportunity for us to learn how village communities live in harmony with the nature and use it's resources in a judicious way. We also learnt how the communities are dependent on the timber & non timber forest products and use them for their livelihood. Their commitment for the conservation of forests is also to watch out for as they have formed Various van suraksha samitis for the upkeep of the same. Department of forests is also working in collaboration with the village communities for better management of forests & their resources. Agricultural practices are the primary occupation of the people there yet they are aware of the benefits of higher education as we have been informed that two persons from the devarsur village are doctors and serving the community free of cost. The installation of solar system for recharging water tanks revealed the work done in the concerned area and technical advancement achieved. We are thankful to the TATA INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, HYDERABAD for giving this opportunity.

Ghatanji, Yavatmal (Maharashtra)

Team: Tejaswini, Shruti, Praneeth, Puneshwar, Subhash

As part of our Natural Resources and Governance curriculum at TISS, Hyderabad, our five-member team interned with the Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) in Yavatmal District, Maharashtra. Our ten-day Experiential Learning Rural Exposure Visit (REV) covered four villages; Jarur, Lahan Mowada, Khadki, and Bhutaipoda, along with Khadki Forest and Saikheda Dam, in the Ghatanji sub-district.
The primary objectives of the REV were to establish connections with communities in different village settlements, analyse socio-economic conditions through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools and informal interactions, understand the management of common property resources, assess the state of natural resources, identify on-site problems, and evaluate FES's role in community welfare and natural resource conservation.
Learnings showcased village communities' sustainable use of natural resources, with an emphasis on environmental preservation. Villagers embraced technological advancements like solar panels on farms. In Jarur village, FES collaboration transformed barren land into communal grazing space with diverse tree plantations. FES's check dam restoration positively impacted the village's water table, providing fishing as a livelihood. The REV highlighted the significance of community-driven initiatives, exemplifying resource conservation and the positive impact of organisations like FES on rural well-being.

And also we observed the cultural and diet practices of the villagers. By using statistical tools we made Ven-diagrams,bar graphs, Pie Charts and histograms. And also using QGIS(geo-graphical information system) we made study areas of the 7 villages. we also came to know how the ruler communities in India rely on forest for livelihood, medicine and fuel wood, their dependency on common. We are thankful to TATA Institute of Social Science, Hyd for collaborating with FES for giving us the chance to learn about rural life in India.
