Did you know? In the year 2010, The education sector topped the chart in print advertising pipping traditional gainers like FMCG, Telecom, and the Automobile sectors. Lovely Professional University, Maharana Pratap Group of Institutions, Manav Rachna International University and Aakash Institute were some of the more regular advertisers in the sector.

With the mushrooming of a large number of private educational institutions, advertising seemed to be an easy to reach out to the masses and establish some form of brand familiarity. However, owing to the credibility of information shared in these advertisements, The Advertisement Standard s Council of India (ASCI) released certain guidelines to be followed by players in the education sector.

The guidelines set up by ASCI intend to curb any misleading information through the medium of advertising. Some of these guidelines:

--> Prohibit institutions from claiming that enrolment in an institution will provide a student employment (temporary, permanent, promotions, or salary increase) unless, the advertiser is able to substantiate and assume responsibility for the same.

--> No claims regarding extent of batch placed, the highest or average compensation of students places, admission to renowned educational institutes or affiliation with a foreign institute unless substantiated with evidence.

Have you come across advertisements with claims that violate the guidelines of ASCI? Do advertisements in the education sector communicate misleading information? Tell us in the comments!

It is that time of the year!

The beginning of a new academic year marks yet another milestone in the learning journey of students. Some students may chose to move on to new career paths, Some students may choose to move to a new institution, and Some students may choose alternative modes of learning. No matter what the choice, educators & institutions see every new academic year as an opportunity to sell to you their best offering.

"Admissions Open", and "Limited Seats" are no new sight for our eyes. Billboards with endless pictures of rank holders, and perfect scores never fail to make an impression in the minds of the child's parents. This week, we discuss the ethicality of advertising in education and how it affects the learning choices we make for young adults.

As we surf across the third wave of the pandemic, online education continues to reassure the privileged (those with access & affordability to resources), a safe and less risky learning environment. Apart from the obvious benefits of a safe learning environment, The new normal to education has definitely been a catalyst to drive digital innovations in learning. Remote learning has given young learners an early exposure to digital environments, the benefits of which will hopefully translate in the coming years in terms of better familiarity, adaptability and efficacy while working in a digital atmosphere. Apart from the exposure the new normal imposed on learners, many educators also gathered a greater exposure with the industry as they were able to reach out to learning communities beyond geopolitical barriers.

Several studies have proved numerous personal benefits of the new normal for the learning communities. However, at TIEC we believe that these benefits should reach every learner on earth to attain the full benefit of the system.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this!

"Our school had to announce severe pay cuts at the commencement of the new academic year since a lot of parents had not paid the fees from the previous academic year. After several reminders and alerts, parents eventually started coming to campus, to clear the fee dues of their wards. Keeping in mind social distancing protocols, I didn’t venture to greet any parents but, there was one face that caught my attention. I decided to strike a conversation from a distance. After exchanging pleasantries, I enquired about her family, their health and she told me how the pandemic almost brought the family to the street. The young lady worked as a Montessori teacher in a missionary school and was the sole bread winner of the family. Just like most of us, she too faced severe pay cuts as a result of the pandemic. On being informed about the commencement of online classes, I could feel the desperation in the mother’s eyes..”
(Personal experience narrated by a member)

The experience one of our members had is not a stand alone narrative.

Prolonged closure of school campuses, lack of access to online infrastructure, coupled with deteriorating economic conditions has led to an increased incidence of child labour, child marriages and several child related crimes both in rural and urban India. The lockdown has setback India’s progress in several social development factors. Apart from social development, long term closure of schools has also severely impacted children’s health. The role that schools play in the physical, mental, emotional & social needs of children is undebated for.

If you are a student, a sibling, or a parent take this time to think about privilege. What would you do if you were not privileged and had no other choice for your child?

More than a year has passed since India went into its first Covid-19 lockdown. Schools shut at the fag end of an academic year. While countries like Portugal, France and Netherlands kept schools open, Indian schools shut in March 2020 and hasn't resumed classes on campuses since then.

As positivity rates decline, different states have begun to unlock and ease restrictions throughout India. This week at the Indian Educators Collective, we discuss:

👉 Should schools in India resume  classes on campus?

👉 Are schools ready to be unlocked?

👉 How are leaders in the academia preparing themselves during these times of uncertainty?
