Dear Principal,

Sub: Preparing for ASL

Assessment of Speaking and Listening has now become compulsory in all CBSE schools for Classes IX and XI. We recognise that the examination is important for students, but before students are ready for this they need extensive exposure to speaking and listening in the classroom. Such a major shift in classroom teaching, which traditionally focuses on reading and writing, is not always easy. The Language School (TLS) school spoke to a number of English teachers in CBSE schools and many of them said they needed additional support to help their students develop their listening and speaking skills so they that they could face the summative test of speaking and listening with greater confidence.

In response to this need The Language School (TLS) has designed a five-day training programme for teachers of English - 'Speaking and Listening in the English Classroom'.

The training programme will cover the following areas:

- Introduction to the communicative approach of language learning.
- Examining the speaking and listening components of CBSE - ASL programme.
- Organising the class for communicative language teaching.
- Practising listening activities to enable active listening focusing on meaning, theme, purpose, attitude etc; teachers will be given practice in creating and conducting listening tasks based on the topics specified by CBSE.
- Practising speaking activities to enable fluent communication using the right structures, lexis, stress and intonation; teachers will be given extensive practice in creating topic-based situations for their students focusing on problem-solving tasks.
- Addressing the problems faced by teachers in the classroom in conducting speaking and listening tasks.
- Demonstration and practice in grading listening and speaking tasks.

The training programme is being organised at the premises of Orient Blackswan Pvt. Ltd, Himayatnagar from 27th September to 1st October 2014 (both days inclusive) from 9.30 a.m to 4. 45 p.m. The fee for a participant is Rs 3000/- which is inclusive of training material, lunch, tea and snacks.

Please confirm the participation of your teachers by sending us a mail to [email protected]. You are requested to send the fee for participation by cheque/draft to:

GRADED EXAMINATIONS IN SPOKEN ENGLISH - INDIA

The Graded Examinations in Spoken English India offers a series of six progressively graded examinations.

These exams aim to provide a continuous evaluation of linguistic competence, from the level of Basic User [Grade1] to Independent User [Grade 6].

The tasks involve one-to-one conversations and discussions with a trained Indian examiner.

The tasks focus on spontaneous real-life exchanges in which an examiner and candidates share information, ideas and opinions on relevant things.

These exams do not encourage memorized responses.
The required linguistic and communicative skills for each grade are clearly listed in the syllabus that will be given to registration and it will help you in deciding what grade you should choose.

The exams do not come at the end of any course. It is your communicative proficiency that is tested in GESE.

Certificates awarded are internationally accredited.

Assessing Speaking and Listening(ASL)

The Language School is the training partner of Orient Blackswan, one of the leading publishers of academic books for schools and colleges. Orient Blackswan, being National Manager of the GESE (Graded Examination in Spoken English) conducted by Trinity College London, has the onerous responsibility of providing training to teachers to teach the twin skills of listening and speaking. The GESE syllabus is designed on the CEFR matrix from Levels A0 to C2 in 12 grades. The Language School has the expertise and resources required to train teachers of all classes.

As CBSE has made it compulsory for classes IX, X and XI to have a summative assessment at the end of each term, it is essential to train students at the formative stage itself to be confident speakers of English. We propose to train secondary/higher secondary teachers of CBSE on the methodology of developing listening and speaking skills in students. In doing that, our objective is to help teachers not only teach the skills but also facilitate their practice in the classroom.

Please help us achieve our goal by answering a few questions.
