Short Story: Patriots’ Day in Manipur

Patriots’ Day is observed every year on 13 August in Manipur to remember the brave patriots who fought against British colonial forces during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.

In 1891, the British attempted to establish greater control over Manipur. The Manipuri forces, led by brave leaders including Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General, resisted the British with great courage. Although Manipur was eventually defeated, the patriots continued to stand for the freedom and honour of their land.

On 13 August 1891, Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General were publicly executed by the British at Pheidabung, now known as Bir Tikendrajit Park in Imphal. Their sacrifice became a powerful symbol of courage, patriotism and love for the motherland.

Today, people across Manipur observe Patriots’ Day by paying floral tributes, remembering the martyrs and teaching the younger generation about their courage and sacrifice. The day reminds us that true patriotism means courage, unity, sacrifice and love for our homeland.
