St. Xavier's School, Hazaribag

On Monday 6 August 2018, the Australian Jesuit and Founder of our School Fr. John Moore was honoured by the Postal Department of India with the issue of a first day cover and postage stamp to mark the centenary of his birth.

Born in country Victoria and later completing his Jesuit training in Melbourne, Sydney and at Sevenhill, SA, Fr. Moore was a member of the original team of six Jesuits who arrived in the Hazaribag region of India in 1951.
He built and organised the new St. Xavier’s School in Hazaribag, which opened its doors to students in January 1952.
In 1966 Fr. Moore started another school at Bokaro Steel City, and a new St. Xavier’s School that was co-educational and provided for poor students. Later he was involved in the Colloquium and Curriculum Improvement Program.
In the Australian Dictionary of Jesuit Biography, Fr. Moore is remembered as a gentle man who was courteous and supportive.
‘He formed a strong bond with both students and parents, as he was essentially a caring and compassionate man. Discipline and routine matters were left to other teachers’, the biography notes.
‘At all times during his teaching career Moore encouraged students to think for themselves and confront the problems of life. He was also keen on writing concerning Jesuit education, and gave many speeches on the topic.’
Since his death in 1988 at the age of 70, he has been remembered fondly in India as a humble giant of an educator who had an immense impact on generations of students and parents.

This is a nostalgic book on old Hazaribag written by a HOXAN of 1961 batch. He grew up in Hazaribag in the early 1950's and saw the transformation of Hazaribag.

Synopsis :
Malay Kumar Roy studied in St. Xavier's School, Hazaribag, from where he completed his Senior Cambridge (class of 1961). From the early 1950's to the early '60s he lived in Hazaribag in the Chotanagpur district of Jharkhand, then a part of Bihar. Working in the corporate world for close to 50 years left little time for much else, and after retirement, he writes his book "An Elsewhere Place - Boyhood Days in Hazaribag"
In this book he writes about the wonderful charm and ambiance of Hazaribag of that time. He writes about his years in St. Xavier's School, of the Jesuit fathers who taught there, of the fundamental human values they shared - integrity, knowing right from wrong, curiosity and memories of his school mates.
He vividly describes Hazaribag's serene landscape, the beautiful tone and texture of its changing seasons. The book recalls startling wildlife encounters. It speaks about the joys and sorrows of village folk - old and young, and incidents - mostly hilarious - that relate to vacationing visitors to Hazaribag.

"An Elsewhere Place" is about a time never to return. It evokes a gentle, easy going time when people lived in close harmony with nature. This book is about days of friendships, wonder, innocence and grace.

From the early 1950s to the early ’60s, Malay Kumar Roy spent around ten years as a young boy in Hazaribagh in the Chhotanagpur district of Jharkhand, which was then a part of Bihar. In An Elsewhere Place, Roy reminisces about his life there—a place that ‘touches a boy forever’.
