Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan, organized an awareness programme on Ragging Prevention, emphasizing the serious and lasting impact of ragging on studentsโ€™ mental well-being, education, and future careers.

Inaugurating the programme, A.T. Bhanu, Inspector, City Police Station, highlighted that the psychological trauma caused by ragging can continue even after students enter the workforce, affecting their confidence and ability to function as part of a team.

She explained that ragging includes physical or mental harassment, humiliating or offensive behaviour, and forcing junior students to perform unwanted tasks. She also highlighted the Supreme Court guidelines issued in 1998 and the UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging, 2009, which define and prohibit ragging both within and beyond the college campus.

The session also drew attention to the severe consequences of ragging, including students discontinuing their education and, in extreme cases, the risk of su***de. Students were reminded of the importance of the anti-ragging affidavit submitted at the time of admission and the legal consequences of involvement in ragging incidents.

Dr. S. Pradeep, Principal, emphasized that ragging can severely affect studentsโ€™ self-confidence and stressed the importance of maintaining a safe, respectful and supportive campus environment.

The programme was attended by Dr. Indira Bahadur, Dean โ€“ Student Affairs; Dr. Kalavathi G K, HoD, First Year; G. Manjunath, Hostel Administrator, along with faculty members and students.
