Founded in the year 2017 by a local youth, the school caters to the underserved community of the Biate tribe.

Haite Memorial Friendship School proudly celebrated the 80th Independence Day of India with great enthusiasm, patriotism and joy. After days of preparation, practice and hard work by our students, teachers, staff and parents, the much-awaited celebration finally came to life.
The programme was graced by our esteemed Chief Guest, Pu. Zoramkhuma Thianglai (Biate Kalim), who led the flag hoisting ceremony and shared valuable and inspiring words with the students and everyone present.

Reaching Mualdam isn’t the easiest journey, especially for a first-time visitor, but that’s part of what makes it so special.

The nearest major city is Guwahati. From there, the quickest route is to take a train to Lanka Railway Station (about 2 hours), followed by a bus ride to Umrangso (around 2.5 hours). The final stretch is by a local camper or pickup vehicle, winding through the hills for another 4 hours.

Including transfers, waiting time, and the occasional roadside tea break, the journey takes about 10 hours on a good day.

It’s a long road, but the landscapes, the people, and the experience at the end make every hour worth it.

After the successful results of our Class 10 board examinations, we made a bold decision to send five of our students outside Northeast India for higher education, giving them access to new opportunities, experiences, and exposure.

With the support of Sunbird Trust, three girls have joined St. Agnes College and two boys have enrolled at St. Anne’s College in Mangalore.

Having spent their entire lives studying in their village, this journey marks many firsts for our students, their first visit to Guwahati, first train journey, first flight, and first time travelling outside Northeast India. Most importantly, it is their first step towards experiencing a new culture, meeting new people, and learning beyond the classroom.

For the students, their families, and our school community, sending children so far from home is both a challenge and a milestone. As they begin this exciting new chapter, we wish them courage, growth, and success.

May this journey open doors to a future filled with possibilities. ❤️✨

Today, our school Principal, William Ngamlai, was honoured with the Birsa Lives in New Bharat – The Unsung Hero Award by the Tribal Affairs Department, Assam (Plains) in recognition of the work being done to enable access to quality education in one of the remotest parts of Assam.

The award recognised 10 unsung heroes from across Assam, including musicians, artisans, scholars, and agriculturalists. We are deeply proud that our work and journey have been acknowledged alongside so many inspiring individuals contributing to their communities in meaningful ways.

This recognition is a testament to the collective effort and commitment of our founder and principal, teachers, students, community members, and the entire team at Sunbird Trust. Every milestone we achieve is built on years of shared hard work, resilience, and belief in the transformative power of education.

We are grateful for this honour and remain committed to continuing our efforts to ensure that children in remote and underserved communities have access to the right quality of education and opportunities to thrive.

We are honoured to share that our school was invited to the Fourth Edition of Trivia Fest 2026, organised by the Helping Everyone Live and Prosper Society, Haflong, to receive the Trivia Excellence Award for our students’ outstanding success in the recent Class 10 board examinations.

This recognition is especially meaningful because all eight students from our school who appeared for the board exams passed successfully. These are the same students who walked all the way to Umrangso to appear for their examinations — a story that touched many hearts after being featured by Guwahati Plus.

We sincerely thank HELP Society for recognising the hard work, determination, and resilience of our students and teachers. This achievement is a testament to the persistence and commitment shown by everyone involved in ensuring access to education, even in the most challenging circumstances.

Living in the interior and often isolated regions of Assam, access to opportunities and exposure is one of our school’s biggest challenges and responsibilities. We believe our children deserve to see a world far bigger than their surroundings. 🌍✨

Over the years, we have introduced them to drama, dance, photography, writing, art, sports, and music. And now, we’ve added something magical to that list, star gazing. 🌌

With the generous support of a thoughtful friend, we received a telescope and conducted our very first night of sky observation. Our children were absolutely enthralled — seeing the Sun and Moon up close, witnessing the recent lunar eclipse, spotting Jupiter with its bands and moons, and identifying constellations and stars for the first time.

For many of them, it was the first time they truly looked at the sky, not just as something distant, but as something they could explore.

We are deeply grateful to the friends who believed in our school’s work and made this possible, and a special thanks to Bhavan from Starvoirs for guiding and inspiring our young astronomers.

The universe feels a little closer now and our children are excited to keep exploring it. 🚀🌙
