১৮৫৫ সালে আজকের দিনে শুরু হয়েছিল ইতিহাসের এক স্মরণীয় যাত্রা, যা আজও অনবরত চলছে।
রানি রাসমণি দেবী কালীর স্বপ্নাদেশ পেয়ে এই মন্দির প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। মন্দির প্রতিষ্ঠাকালে রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসের দাদা রামকুমার চট্টোপাধ্যায় রানিকে প্রভূত সাহায্য করেছিলেন। রামকুমারই ছিলেন মন্দিরের প্রথম প্রধান পুরোহিত। ১৮৫৭-৫৮ সালে কিশোর রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস এই মন্দিরের পূজার ভার গ্রহণ করেন। পরবর্তীকালে তিনি এই মন্দিরকেই তার সাধনক্ষেত্ররূপে বেছে নেন।
দক্ষিণেশ্বর কালীবাড়ি চত্বরে কালীমন্দির ছাড়াও একাধিক দেবদেবীর মন্দির ও অন্যান্য ধর্মস্থল অবস্থিত। মূল মন্দিরটি নবরত্ন মন্দির। এটি টালিগঞ্জের রামনাথ মণ্ডল নির্মিত নবরত্ন মন্দিরের আদর্শে নির্মিত। মূল মন্দির ছাড়াও রয়েছে "দ্বাদশ শিবমন্দির" নামে পরিচিত বারোটি আটচালা শিবমন্দির। মন্দিরের উত্তরে রয়েছে "শ্রীশ্রীরাধাকান্ত মন্দির" নামে পরিচিত রাধাকৃষ্ণ মন্দির এবং মন্দিরের দক্ষিণে রয়েছে নাটমন্দির।মন্দির চত্বরের উত্তর-পশ্চিম কোণে রয়েছে রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংসের বাসগৃহ।মূল মন্দির চত্বরের বাইরে রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস ও তার পরিবারবর্গের স্মৃতিবিজড়িত আরও কয়েকটি স্থান রয়েছে, যা আজ পুণ্যার্থীদের কাছে ধর্মস্থানরূপে বিবেচিত হয়।
সবশেষে একটি কথা বলতে পারি শ্রদ্ধা ভক্তি বিশ্বাস যা নির্মাণ করতে পারে নতুন স্মরণীয় ইতিহাসের ।

Direct Action Day (16 August 1946), also known as the 1946 Calcutta Killings, was a day of nationwide communal riots. It led to large-scale violence between Muslims and Hindus in the city of Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) in the Bengal province of British India. The day also marked the start of what is known as The Week of the Long Knives. While there is a certain degree of consensus on the magnitude of the killings , including their short-term consequences, controversy remains regarding the exact sequence of events, various actors’ responsibility, and the long-term political consequences.
