The story you are referring to is a popular anecdote (often presented as historical) involving Aurangzeb (the Mughal emperor, r. 1658–1707) and the Maharani (queen) of Kutch (Cutch), linked to the demolition of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi (Benares).
The Popular Story (as circulated in certain accounts)
In the mid-17th century, Aurangzeb was traveling with a large entourage that included several Hindu Rajput or noble kings and their queens (sometimes described as 44 ranis). The Hindu rulers requested a halt in Varanasi so their wives could bathe in the Ganges and offer prayers at the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple.
The queens visited the temple in palanquins, with security posted along the route.
After their visit, all the queens returned to the camp except the Maharani of Kutch (wife of one of the Hindu kings loyal to Aurangzeb).
A search was conducted, but she was nowhere to be found. Aurangzeb became furious and ordered a thorough investigation.
Soldiers discovered a movable statue of Ganesha in the temple wall that concealed a hidden staircase leading to an underground cellar or basement beneath the shrine.
There, they found the Maharani—dishonored (some versions say r***d or molested), weeping, and robbed of all her jewelry and ornaments.
She reportedly revealed that priests (Brahmins/pandits) of the temple had lured or forced her there and committed the crime. (Some tellings claim this was a known practice of looting wealthy pilgrims.)
The Hindu kings in the entourage were said to be outraged and demanded justice. In response, Aurangzeb ordered the demolition of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple to punish the "wicked priests" and prevent such incidents. A mosque (now known as the Gyanvapi Mosque) was later built on the site.
This narrative portrays Aurangzeb as acting out of righteous anger to protect a Hindu queen's honor, at the request of Hindu nobles themselves. It has been cited in books like B.N. Pande's works, some older anecdotes (e.g., references to Ahkam-i-Alamgiri), and various online articles or social media posts to counter the dominant view of Aurangzeb as an iconoclast.a8e25f
Historical Context and Criticism
Historians widely regard this as a later legend or myth rather than a verified contemporary account. Primary Mughal sources, such as Maasir-i-Alamgiri (a chronicle from Aurangzeb's reign), record a general order in 1669 to demolish temples and suppress "infidel" practices, explicitly mentioning the destruction of the Vishwanath temple in Kashi (along with the Keshavdev temple in Mathura) as part of broader policies to assert Islamic orthodoxy.736c98

While Aurangzeb (then emperor) was traveling with his army toward Bengal (or passing near Varanasi on a campaign), several Hindu Rajput kings or nobles in his entourage requested a one-day halt so their queens (Ranis) could visit Kashi. The purpose: to take a holy dip in the Ganges and offer prayers at the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple.
Aurangzeb reportedly agreed readily. Army pickets and security were posted along the roughly five-mile route to the temple for protection. The Ranis traveled in palanquins (palkis), bathed in the Ganga, performed puja at the temple, and returned—except for one: the Maharani of Kutch (from the Kutch region in Gujarat, often linked in the tale to a Hindu ruler loyal to the Mughals or from Gujarat's princely connections).
A search of the temple precincts found no trace of her. When Aurangzeb learned of the disappearance, he became enraged and ordered a more thorough investigation. Soldiers eventually discovered a hidden mechanism: an idol of Ganesh on a sliding wall that revealed steps leading to an underground cellar or dungeon beneath the shrine.
There, they found the Maharani weeping. She had been robbed of all her ornaments and jewelry by some of the temple priests (Brahmins), who allegedly had a practice of looting wealthy pilgrims in this secret chamber. The queen had been trapped or held there.
Upon hearing this, the accompanying Hindu Rajas were furious and protested strongly to Aurangzeb, demanding justice against the "wicked Brahmins" and the temple that enabled such crimes. In response—according to the story—Aurangzeb, though reluctant himself, ordered the demolition of the Kashi Vishwanath temple to "teach a lesson" and prevent further such incidents. A mosque (later associated with Gyanvapi) was built on the site.
