The Telegraph, India, English News Paper 25/01/2016

This is a continuation from the previous post on Inverted Pyramid Approach to writing news in Journalismโ€ฆ.

The Telegraph method of transmitting messages coincided with the American Civil War. During those times, the telegraph lines went 'down' frequently. So the war messengers started prioritizing the transmission of news- they sent the most important newsworthy information first followed by news in a decreasing order of importance. This ensured that the lead news/crucial news about enemy movements got transmitted intact.

Overall the bottom line was to convert the most important and summarized news first- i.e the lead news.

This method lead to a three layered way of transmitting news in journalism i.e. most important news first, important news second and then least important news last. Additionally, this gave the newspaper the flexibility to fit in last minute news by trimming off the third layers from different news articles.

For instance see the below extract of the lead news from Jan 24 'The Telegraph' (Kolkata version):

Jan 24: University of Hyderabad vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile today went on indefinite leave following advice from undeclared quarters. Read the complete news by using the link below:

See for yourself how they have used the inverted pyramid to structure their news article.

Though used regularly in newspapers, the same method can be adopted for our official communications when time is a constraint for us.
So remember- when the next time someone asks you in an interview you to tell about yourself within the next two minutes follow the inverted pyramid approach.

The Telegraph, India, English News Paper English News Paper, The Telegraph e-Paper brings Latest News in English on Politics, Business, Bollywood, Cricket, Lifestyle, Education, Entertainment, sports and more from Calcutta.

Curiosity happens where there are Gaps in knowledge. Once we realize that we have a gap in our knowledge we are driven to learn more.

This is known as the Gap Theoryโ€ฆ This theory was provided by George Loewestein from the Carnegie Mellon University..

Teachers or mentors should make use of this theory to make learning a more interesting and fun experience.

To create a gap..show students something which they already know.. and then tell them what they do not know.. For instance- an earth science teacher may ask his students to bring pictures of an earthquake devastation. All students will understand "what" an earthquake does.. but the gap that will be created by the exercise is "how" it happens.. this will set the context for studying tectonic plate movements.

Teaching and learning can be fun by using the right tools...
