700,000 tons of azo dyes are made yearly. 15-20% dumped untreated into water -- blocking sunlight, depleting aquatic oxygen, and making the water carcinogenic

A team at has isolated a bacterium found living in textile wastewater and found an enzyme that breaks these dyes down and leaves non-toxic by-products.
