The Smart Materials, Structures, and Systems (SMSS) Laboratory, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur, proudly marks its 26th Foundation Day on June 8, 2025, celebrating 25 years of pioneering research and innovation in smart materials, sensors, intelligent systems, and robotics.

Established on June 8, 2000, the SMSS Lab has grown into a Centre of Excellence through significant support from AR&DB, ACECOST, MODROB (Ministry of Education), and later from ISRO, HAL, and GAIL. Over the years, the lab has made impactful contributions through supervision of 116 MTech, MS(R), and M.Des theses, and 22 PhD dissertations.

With over 200 journal publications, participation in 60+ conferences, and more than 25 awarded patents, SMSS Lab maintains strong academic collaborations with institutions in Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Sweden, the UK, USA, and Australia.
