Khamba Thoibi Jagoi or Khamba Thoibi dance is a folk dance form originating in the ancient Moirang kingdom of Manipur. Based on the 12th-century Meitei epic poem of the same name, the dance depicts the love saga between Khuman prince, Khamba, and Moirang princess, Thoibi.

It is believed that Khamba and Thoibi danced together before Lord Thangjing, a celebrated deity of Moirang for the peace and prosperity of the land.

Khamba Thoibi is also one of the greatest poems in Meitei literature. With 34,000 verses, it is even longer than the Ramayana.

Did you ever get the chance to see this ancient dance form?

Agriculture is a self-reliant way of life for the people of Manipur. Rice remains the staple diet and accounts for almost all the cereal crop production in the state.

Farmers still practice the traditional way of planting rice seedlings manually. They divide each young sapling and plant in waterlogged fields, which involves grueling physical work.

Seeds sowed on dry land during the sowing season are uprooted, kept in bunches, and later transplanted into the waterlogged fields.

While men do the plowing and weeding, women wade into the flooded fields to plant the rice saplings in rows.

Locals in the hills usually start rice plantations in June until late July. With the arrival of monsoon rains, the terrace fields become muddy and wet, making it perfect for plantation.

Did you ever get the chance to plant a sapling on the farm?
