On February 26 we had a small yet important gathering of music enthusiasts at IIT Guwahati. Smt. Sumana Ramanan, a journalist-cum -writer, who was briefly visiting IIT Guwahati, discussed her newly published book `The Secret Master: Arun Kashalkar and a Journey to the Edge of Music’. She spoke about some important aspects of Pt. Arun Kashalkar‘s musical journey. In spite of being a master of Khayal singing, having imbibed the essence of Gwalior, Agra, and Jaipur gharanas, remains unknown to a broader audience beyond a select circle of musiciqns and connoisseurs. The book thus explores some key questions about the nature of mainstream Hindustani musical ecosystem and the history of Khayal, its various styles and asthetics, as Mrs. Ramanan explained. The talk was followed by a short question-and-answer session. Finally, Smt. Sabarni Dasgupta, the founder and music teacher of Lihaaz presented a khayal demonstration of Raag Jog, followed by a Dadra and a Bhajan.

The evening was enriching and fulfilling. However, with on-going exams in the schools and at IIT, we couldn’t host it for a broader audience. We sincerely apologize to all the Lihaaz family members and music connoisseurs in and around Guwahati. We pledge to carry on our journey to promote and spread Indian classical music

Lihaaz had the privilege to present a bouquet of soulful bhajans on the occasion of 'Charanamrit' arranged to celebrate the birth centenary of Shri Satya Saibaba at the PWD Conversation Centre in Guwahati on Sunday, 26th October. The program started with Mayabini, the iconic song dedicated to the musical brilliance of late Shree Zubeen Garg. The bhajans included Tujhse humne dilko lagaya, Ab Kayse Tute, Prabhu ka naam, Kastaharana Teri naam Raam, Hari Hari Hari Hari Sumirana Karo, Hamaro Pranam etc. Smt. Sabarni Dasgupta, the Guru of Lihaaz ended with a devotional rendition of Raag Bairagi. Shri Dibyajyoti Changmai and Shri Shankarjyoti Saikia provided nuanced Tabla accompaniment. The program was well attended by the music lovers and devotees. Special thanks to Shri Satyen Sarma for this wonderful opportunity.

We recently concluded our annual program on April 5, 2025. The program was a great success. From the details of the planning, to meticulous ex*****on of the musical pieces, we poured our heart and mind. We had many reports via facebook, whatsapp, phone calls, smiling faces in the shopping centre, or in academic blocks, expressing joy and happiness witnessing the program.

Our thanks goes to our esteemed guests Sree A**l Chatterjee, Sree Brajeswar Mukherjee and Sree Emon Sarkar for putting up an extraordinary show. With your blessings, we are going to host a classical musical evening at IIT Guwahati with Anol Chatterjee da and Brajeswar Mukherjee da all set to storm the stage on April 5. We cordially invite all of you to join us and make it a huge success.
