The Perils of #EdTech (Part 1) - Screens, Schemes, and Scheming: How EdTech Turned Schools Into Glorified WiFi Hotspots! 25/11/2025

A humourised, hard-hitting ROAST of Educators, Parents, Education Administrators, School Owners, Governments who are mindlessly adopting EdTech in Education Institutions.

Ever seen a brain do squats? Handwriting and reading real books are cognitive workouts—building neural strength screens can’t match. For learning that truly sticks, sometimes old school is the smartest school.

This is the first of my series abut 'The Perils of '. For the past 15 years I have been creating awareness and have written in my book, and columns for Education magazine and spoken in Education Forums where I have addressed Education Babus (Politicians and Bureaucrats), Educators, School Owners, Parents and Education Institution Administrators about how and why writing with pen and paper and reading real books rather than using digital gadgets to key in or type words, impacts learning and cognitive skills? Research shows as given below that there is Nothing like pen and paper and writing for enhancing cognitive skills.

Writing with pen and paper enhances learning by engaging more brain regions and promoting better memory recall than typing, due to the complex, sensory, and fine motor skills involved. This physical act helps develop neural pathways, strengthen fine motor skills, and improve spatial reasoning. Studies show handwriting also leads to higher spelling accuracy, deeper processing of information, and improved focus, making it a superior method for cognitive engagement and information retention. Here is my first ROAST in this POST inspired by Sophie Winkelman's talk at ARC where she spoke about the perils of EdTech and gadgets . Transcript of talk is in the link given here and part of the talk is in the video shared in the post.

Welcome to the future of education, where school is less about “studying” and more about “buffering.” Remember the days when a teacher’s biggest tech headache was untangling the overhead projector cord? Now, school-owners and governments are so addicted to EdTech, they expect kindergarteners to have a LinkedIn profile and a TikTok résumé by recess. Give it up for progress—by which I mean “Give up… actual progress.”

Launching Season 4 with the powerful story of Debbie Weiss, who shares "What She wants you to know about Widowhood and Coping with Death of a loved one" in her own words as abridged here

Loneliness was the hardest thing I faced when I lost my husband. The people who reached out to me when I was newly widowed probably saved my life.

I was a rational woman, a former attorney, pretty close to being grown up. But all changed when my husband died.

I had 32 years with my George until he died of cancer. I was 50 and he was 53. We started dating when I was a high school senior. I invited George to my prom and we were together ever since.

When he died, I fell apart.

Few people are able to deal with death, especially when it’s premature. For a while, my loss was debilitating. It felt physical, like I’d lost part of a lung and couldn’t breathe properly. Not surprisingly, losing a spouse is ranked number one on the stress scale as an event likely to cause illness.

I was always exhausted, a double whammy caused both by losing George and having been his caregiver. I should have worn a sign that read: “Recent Widow. Be gentle. Agitate at Your Own Risk.”

My loneliness after his death was harder to cope with than the loss itself.

After he died, people went silent. A couple of friends thought “being there” meant texting smiley-faced emojis. On average, women lose 75 percent of their support base after their spouses die. But all our friends need to do is call or email, recounting a good memory of the deceased and offering to meet for coffee.

I finally contacted George’s best friend after I didn’t hear from him for several months. When I asked why, he said, “I didn’t know what to say.” People worry they’ll seem intrusive, but ignoring a new widow is far worse.

My personal bane is people who say, “Just get out there!” Where is “out there” exactly? And the recently widowed lack the wherewithal to find it.

In my isolation, I made choices I never would’ve made before. I wound up with a younger boyfriend, but he became impossibly possessive. Later, I became an online dating addict to avoid the pain of being alone.

I had to start from scratch to find friends. I joined groups including a synagogue, the Rotary Club, a car club (not sure what I was thinking), a writing class, and a yoga studio.

Don’t Be These 7 types when talking to the widowed:

1. The Determinists
2. The Pathologists
3. The Empathizers
4. The Backseat Grievers
5. The Dating Coaches
6. The Grudge Holders
7. The Generic Helpers

It took me over two years to function as an adult instead of an angry teenager. And another year after that for my brain to reconstitute. Ultimately, I emerged stronger and much less judgmental than when I was married. I have now (gasp) dated more than one man at a time.

More importantly, when we lose our spouses, even if we’re at our worst, our friends and family need to come closer, not leave us to ourselves.

1930 Hours on 1st May 2022 ~ Cool Convo with Inspiring Author

Richard's 30+ years in the financial industry and his mentors (including , and ) taught him how to build the machine and therefore the person to take the machine apart is the person who learned how to put it together.

Mentored by a billionaire, Richard's career came to a stop in 2003 when assets at the company he was part owner in exploded from $1 billion to $12 billion and Richard realized one thing, that professional advisors were violating the basic terms of a prospectus which states past performance is no indicator of future results. The intent of investing is to buy low and sell high, but the reality for the majority is that they buy high to sell low. He chose to leave the business and cash out to spend time with his family, see his kids grow up and be more a part of their lives.

Five years later, ready to return to the business, on Saturday, October 18th, 2008, as the world was reeling with the news of the "global financial crisis," Richard was sitting comfortably at his dining room table reading the Globe & Mail and drinking espresso. He read the headline, "Wanted: A new financial order" and it caught his attention - the head of the IMF "declared the world financial system was 'on the brink of systematic meltdown'," while Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy agreed that "nothing would be truly fixed, they believed, until there was a new world financial system" and Gordon Brown and Merkel agreed that it was "beyond the scope or powers of any national government... would have to involve the whole world, and would require rewriting the rulebook of global capitalism."

Richard read words in this article and he was awakened to the fact that his life had a different purpose, that he was going to write the book on a realistic alternative to capitalism. What makes his book different than any other book on capitalism is that his suggestion for the alternative has absolutely no relationship with capitalism itself in any way whatsoever. He intends to prove to the readers of his book that the alternative he shares is simplistic and easy to manage. His alternative is a world and a system without financial excuses for doing the right thing, which solves the problems of human equality, financial inequality, converting from an economy into an ecology and sustainability for the benefit of all humans. It would create a solution that solves all of the problems that we struggle with each and every day. Please join him for a wild yet realistic ride into the new future!
