The word 'quarantine' has become commonplace now-a-days with all the Ebola scare.but where did it come from??
The Great Plague, or the 'Black Death' of europe was one of the first well recorded pandemics in history. During that time, Venice was a centre of commerce and travel. So it was a potential hotbed for the spread of the disease. The reigning duchy ruled that each and every ship sailing into venice would have to spend a mandatory 40 days out at sea, whence the crew would clean the vessel thoroughly and purge ot of rats.
In italian, 40 is 'Quaranta'.
Thus, just like its medival origin, 'quarantine' came around to the act of keeping a sick man separate from the general population.
