The Backache Mystery: How the UNBOX Heroes Found the Perfect Bed for India - 1

Jay winced as he stretched his back. “Guys, I swear, this chair is out to get me,” he groaned, rubbing his lower back.

“Another back pain complaint? That’s the third one this week!” Tara smirked.

“Not just Jay,” Maya added, looking at her phone. “Back pain is one of the top lifestyle issues in India. And it’s not just old people—young professionals, factory workers, even students complain about it.”

Sid, ever the thinker, tapped his chin. “So why do we have this problem? People have been sleeping for thousands of years—surely they got it right before fancy spring mattresses came in.”

This was enough to set the UNBOX team on an investigation.

They started talking to people. Office workers, farmers, teachers, even wrestlers from a local akhada. The common thread? Long hours of sitting and the wrong kind of beds were making people’s backs miserable.

“But my dadaji never had these issues,” said one farmer in a village. “He slept on a charpai all his life.”

Jay blinked. “Wait… the charpai? That old rope bed?”

Sid quickly pulled up some research. “The charpai is actually brilliant. The woven jute or cotton stretches just enough to support the spine, keeping it aligned. It allows airflow, which keeps it cool, and the height makes it easy to get on and off.”

Maya nodded. “And it’s adaptable. Different regions have their own variations—rope tension, materials, and even weaving patterns.”

Tara jumped in. “Let’s think modern. Most of our beds today use foam and spring coils, which trap heat, don’t adjust to body shape, and eventually sag. The charpai, on the other hand, naturally conforms to the sleeper’s body and can be tightened or loosened.”

Jay raised an eyebrow. “So you’re telling me… our ancestors already solved this problem, and we ignored them?”

“My back feels so much better,” Jay admitted, stretching happily.

Picture this: Jay, Maya, Sid, and Tara - our intrepid UNBOX games heroes - standing in the middle of nowhere, staring at a mysterious QR code like it's an alien artifact. There they were, world-travelers extraordinaire, space explorers supreme... completely stumped by a tiny square of orange and red pixels! 😂

Maya, usually the tech wizard, squinted at the code. "I think if we tilt our heads 37 degrees and squint really hard, it might reveal its secrets," she declared confidently.

Sid, always the pragmatist, tried pressing the QR code like it was a touch screen. "Maybe it needs... encouragement?"

Jay attempted to blow on it, as if it were an old Nintendo cartridge. "Sometimes technology just needs some classic troubleshooting, right?"

Tara, rolling her eyes, suggested they could potentially use it as an extremely complicated coaster.

We are building India’s first tabletop gaming company, UNBOX.

The effort started with Design Thinking workshops at colleges, and then schools. At Launchspace, our parent entity, we did a total of 351 workshops in 12 states over 3 years across colleges and schools. Launchspace’s mission is to democratise creativity in India.

We observed learning and soft skill gaps, and picked up the most common and impactful ones amongst these. Our next effort was to undertake a series of workshops with top educationists, leading industry R&D leaders and NEP2020 co-authors.

One of the leading solution to solve the observed gaps was determined as games. We decided to remain non-digital due to the inherent advantages, and also realising the entire population needs to undertake a digital-detox!

So was born UNBOX.

Each of our games have a core concept (like probability, integer, operators, coordinate geometry, planetary positions, periodic table, etc.), 3-5 core skills, and infinite fun. Some of the games also have SEL elements. But, none of them told by us to the customers.
