Why is it called fencing? The word ‘fence’ was originally a shortening of the Middle English ‘defens’, that came from an Italian word, ‘defensio’, in origin a Latin word. The first known use of defens in reference to English swordsmanship is in William Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor: ‘Alas sir, I cannot fence.’.

KNOW YOUR WEAPONS: In fencing, there are three different weapons – foil, sabre, and epee – and the weapon you use dictates the target area on your opponent.

We do not endorse this! Fencing is an extremely safe sport as the weapons are blunt and protective clothing is worn.
We've all watched the sword scenes in 'The Mask of Zorro', 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Star Wars' with fascination and have play-acted with swords growing up. Fencing has been around since the 12th century and is one of only four sports to be included in every modern Olympic Games, since the first in 1896. Fencing is an all-year-round activity: whether it's wet, cold or sunny. Most importantly, fencing is good exercise both for the body and the mind. It is very challenging as well as fun. And the only thing you need is your foil and someone to play with. Enguard!
