Common nouns are general names of people, places, things, animals and ideas. They are not capitalised unless they begin a sentence. We use common nouns extensively in our writing and communication.
Proper Nouns name specific people, places, things or ideas. They differentiate particular entities from general ones like Eiffel Tower from a tower and Shakespeare from a playwright. They are always capitalised, regardless of where they appear in a sentence.
They are unique identifiers. Names of individuals (Albert Einstein), specific locations (Mount Everest), companies and institutions (Google), events (World War II) and titles (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) are all proper nouns.
Brand names (Nike), Languages and nationalities (English, Canadian), Days; months; holidays (Monday, July, Christmas) Historical periods (Great Depression) etc are all examples of proper nouns.
