It was mid 80s onwards when Doordarshan started becoming a major Window to the world of Literature, and to the world of Classic, International & Regional cinema to an entire teen & young generation of India of ours.
We were introduced to Indian Literature through various series like Darpan (Indian Literature by Basu Chaterjee), Katha Sagar (World Literature by Shyam Benegal), Vividha (Ravindra Nath Tagore by Atmaram) and Ek Kahaani (Indian Literature by Manju Singh)
“Ek Kahaani” of all was a bit different as it used to feature an introduction by Manju Singh followed by the drama and the author’s interview on the relevance of the story in the end)
The serial showcased classic and contemporary Indian literature and explored relationships, philosophy, social issues and folklore. Manju ji also tried to retain the essence of the stories by casting actors from the region, and introduced the episodes each week.
Manju Singh ji not only produced and picked the stories with great warmth & respect for literature and with her charming screen presence, who wouldn’t remember short but memorable role of Amol Palekar’s sister Ratna in Golmal but she preferred content for Kids and some serious stuff like Ek Kahaani & Swaraj.
She will live long in the memorable content she produced in that Golden era of Doordarshan.
Happy Vishu
