Learning Beyond the Classroom: GNWS Students Explore Molecular Biology at CSIR-IGIB
Students of Classes XI and XII of Greater Noida World School recently participated in an enriching two-day outreach programme at the CSIR–Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB), Mall Road Campus. The visit provided a unique opportunity for students to experience the fascinating world of molecular biology through expert-led lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions, and interactions with cutting-edge scientific instruments.
The programme began with an engaging introduction to the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology, helping students understand how genetic information flows from DNA to RNA to proteins and its significance in modern diagnostics and biomedical research. A thought-provoking clinical case study on Ataxia encouraged students to apply scientific reasoning while exploring genetic disorders and molecular diagnostic approaches.
One of the highlights of the visit was the guided tour of advanced research laboratories, where students observed sophisticated instruments such as the Real-Time PCR system, Sanger Sequencer, Flow Cytometer (FACS), Nanodrop Spectrophotometer, Chemi-doc Imaging System, Thermal Cycler, Ultracentrifuge, Tecan Microplate Reader, Laminar Flow Hood, and Centrifuges. Students also witnessed the practical workflow of RNA isolation and learned how RNA quality is assessed using Nanodrop spectrophotometry.
The second day focused on practical molecular biology techniques. Students observed the complete PCR workflow, including reaction preparation, contamination control, and thermal cycling. They also learned the principles and applications of agarose gel electrophoresis, gel imaging, and DNA analysis. A hands-on session on micropipette handling and genomic DNA isolation allowed students to perform essential laboratory techniques under expert guidance. The programme also included a demonstration of laboratory mice handling, providing valuable insight into biomedical research practices.
The outreach concluded with an interactive science quiz and discussion session, reinforcing the concepts learned over the two days and inspiring students to pursue scientific inquiry with curiosity and confidence.
This immersive learning experience bridged the gap between classroom concepts and real-world scientific research, equipping our young learners with practical exposure to modern biotechnology and genomics while igniting their passion for careers in science and research.
