On the occasion of Claude Shannon’s (Father of Information Theory) 105th Birth Anniversary, International Chamber of Professional Education & Industry (ICPEI) organized “International IT Day” & “Claude Shannon Memorial Awards of Excellence Ceremony” on Friday, April 30, 2021 under the patronage of Mr Pankaj Agarwal, Chairman, ICPEI.
The Chief Guest of the event was Prof K K Aggarwal, Chairman, National Board of Accreditation and the distinguished guests and speakers were Dr Amitabh Rajan, Founder President, ICPEI - IAS (Retd.), Chairman, RBI Services Board; Mr Iqbal Singh, Director, Cloud Deployment; Mr Rajeev Sharaf, Head- IT, Torrent Power Mumbai; Dr Harshvardhan, Senior Software Engineer, Google; Dr Jayanthi Ranjan, Director, GITAM Hyderabad Business School; Dr Ramesh Behl, Director, IMI Nagpur and Ms Hema Gopal, Advisor, Management Consulting, KPMG India.
The session started with an invocation to Goddess Saraswati. A video was shown which displayed a brief description and glimpses of ICPEI. The Welcome Address was delivered by Prof (Dr) Ajay Kumar, Senior Vice President, Secretary General, ICPEI in which he shared that Claude Shannon had contributed in the fields of Science, Computing and Technology. He emphasized that his contributions were the backbone of IT development and his IT methods were the biggest source of communication in many fields. He also discussed about key areas which included Channel Capacity, Source Coding, Learning and Data Base, Secrecy and Application.
The Inaugural Address was delivered by Dr Amitabh Rajan in which he shared that Claude Shannon was a genius with cross disciplinary knowledge who worked throughout his life. He highlighted that his Master Dissertation was universally accepted as the best dissertation. He emphasized that after 2001, there was a tectonic shift in the business world where technologies were changing fast and management policies need to be changed. He added that the 4th Industrial Revolution would be there in the market. He also suggested to honor the work of the young generation who comes from small areas.
Prof K K Aggarwal congratulated ICPEI for this initiative and thanked to recognize his work. He shared that Prof Shannon had knowledge about various disciplines and suggested all to be like him who combined various learnings and contributed towards humanity. He added that Information Theory would help to design improved IT structure. He discussed that Artificial Intelligence, 3D Printing, Block Chain and Cryptography were all interdependent.
During the session, the distinguished speakers shared their viewpoints:
1. Mr Iqbal Singh shared that according to Book "Leading Digital", technology must improve the business outcome, consumer expectations and business model. He discussed the case of Asian Paints and emphasized how they digitized the supply chain and changed to B2C and offered home services. He suggested that one must know what IT can do and advised that the world was moving very fast and it’s time to upskill and take timely action.
2. Mr Rajeev Sharaf discussed how every industry compared themselves with others on the basis of IT adoption. He suggested all to ensure IT adoption keeping in mind the security measures also and advised to relearn new skills relevant to the new business. He also shared that robots would provide support to the senior citizens in the coming times.
3. Dr Harshvardhan shared that out of Top 10 companies, 6 were IT dominant companies while 4 were non IT companies. He emphasized that with updated technology, changes had taken place in areas such as distance learning, online shopping, remote working, telehealth, etc. He suggested that local manufacturing must be taken into consideration and redundant supply chain need to be taken care of.
4. Dr Jayanthi Ranjan shared that BMI was the only one which infuses market innovation and data innovation. She added that Pie based competency would come where knowledge of various domains would be required. She discussed 3T's of Data i.e. Tool, Technology and Talent and new technologies such as Neuro Marketing and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). She also emphasized that Industry based research would be the need of the hour.
5. Dr Ramesh Behl stated that new inventions would happen and everyone needs to adapt it accordingly. He emphasized that new jobs would be created so learning must take place all the time. He shared that Artificial Intelligence (AI) would help to make better decisions in the coming times. He also suggested companies to prioritize their people first and empower them.
6. Ms Hema Gopal shared that IT had brought India on the global platform. She stated that nowadays, IT drives the businesses and added that transformation and capability for continuous learning had made people learn new skills. She also discussed the role of IT in Health Care, Investment Banking and role of Block Chain in Insurance.
Later on, Mr Iqbal Singh; Mr Rajeev Sharaf; Dr Harshvardhan; Dr Jayanthi Ranjan; Dr Ramesh Behl and Ms Hema Gopal were awarded with Claude Shannon Memorial Award of Excellence.
Around 220 participants from Industry and Academia participated in the event. It was a thought provoking session which gave a new perspective to understand various aspects and also enhanced the knowledge of the participants.
Overall, it was an engaging session. Finally the session concluded with Vote of Thanks.
