We're glad to announce our third and most experienced core adjudicator on the panel of LLOYD Parliamentary Debate 2K19: Subham Krishna Borah
This is what Shvabh Chakarwarti has to say about him:
It took me a while to write this, mainly because my mind kept on drawing a blank at the thought of writing about Subham(notice that there is no ‘H’, for there is definitely something in a name) for his core profile. No, it is not because there is a dearth of reasons, but rather the quagmire lies in pondering whether I can pen down all those reasons while doing justice to them? I probably can’t, which is why I will tell you some and leave the rest for others in the future. Because, one thing that I am sure about is, this is just the beginning of the dawn, there are so many of these core opportunities which come will for him. For good.
Subham probably would never have thought that beginning of his adulthood would be probably the toughest phase of his life. A person brought up with some of the finest pedigree of cuisines in probably the most beautiful part of the country, in Assam, travelled literally to the other side of the country to land up in scorching ‘dry’ heat of Gujarat. Transition was not easy, but then again, Borah would not know what giving up is. He explored Ahmedabad, the old and new, all of it, to find some of the finest delicious aspects of culture that you probably did not know existed. You probably are wondering why does this sound like a blogger review and not a core introduction?
Well, because you really can’t separate Borah the person from Borah the debater. His ferocious grit to not settle for anything less than what he knows one deserves, whether it is the sumptuous food he explores and makes you try out or the quality of his feedbacks(only fools will make the folly of ignoring his word), both are marked by quality. The finest one at that. And, that’s the thing, his feedback knows no bounds. He is as generous as one comes, whether it is giving time to his juniors after a whole day of classes( you may very well leave the college and save money if you think can afford to miss classes at NIRMA without consequences), the sessions which goes on till midnight in campus, and then till twilight outside of the campus, for that is the cost of giving a quality feedback to everyone who came at the practice. This holds true for any team that he adjes as well. Or any adj who needs help with their feedback. Borah would be there to help!
You must be wondering, giving time and all is fine, but are these feedbacks any good to begin with? There is a gamut of best adj awards, fact that he was the only Indian to break at UADC last year, various invitations from across the country and beyond inviting him to adj should settle that apprehension. But, if you still think that still does not prove anything, for these could just be because of the “rep”? Well, Borah comes from NIRMA, where the society did not have anything, then gave some of the finest debater’s in the country, and then unfortunately became dormant for a long time to come. It is not as if no one in following years did not try, but it was nowhere with the dedication that Borah and Tosh*t gave. To not only build himself(Borah has had his great share of boo boos, debating did not come easy, took so much to come to where he is today but that is for another day) in the face of daunting barriers, but rather to rekindle the society, to start a culture, to inspire people to grow, all of this has contributed to the reputation that he has built for himself. Heck, one of the greatest regrets that I have from debating is that I teamed up with him early in my debating years, and unfortunately conflicted him out of all my debates. For I lost a fine and fair adj (Oh, the pain!). Forever(sigh). That is the thing right, he really does not care about who you are, but all he cares about is what you say. He is proud when he dissents, because he believes in his call, and sooner or later, everyone else does too. For you lost or won because you deserved to. Fairness seems novel because for good or bad, it is scarce, sadly. Debating is fun when it’s fair, Borah ensures that.
His passion for how debates should be is something that I find hard to deal with, at times. Because he is always thinking about how a debate should have gone, how could it have been, what should have been done. A testament to that is how sports motions are called niche and rather inaccessible in the circuit. His love for both sports and motions translated into some of the most fun and accessible motions which everyone could debate at Round Robin. It could only happen because you had someone who cared. Probably, that is all it takes to have fun at a debate, I guess, someone who cares to ensure it is fair and accessible. Borah is one of those. And the debate where he cores, also naturally would be one of those.
