पृथ्वीराज चौहान, जिन्हें पृथ्वीराज तृतीय भी कहा जाता है, 12वीं शताब्दी के एक प्रमुख राजपूत योद्धा और चौहान वंश के शासक थे। उनका जन्म लगभग 1166 ईस्वी में गुजरात के अनहिलवाड़ा (वर्तमान पाटन) में हुआ था। वे राजा सोमेश्वर और रानी कर्पूरादेवी के पुत्र थे। पृथ्वीराज ने 11 वर्ष की आयु में अपने पिता की मृत्यु के बाद अजमेर की गद्दी संभाली, और बाद में दिल्ली पर भी शासन किया।

पृथ्वीराज चौहान ने अपने शासनकाल में कई पड़ोसी हिन्दू राज्यों के खिलाफ सैन्य सफलता प्राप्त की। उन्होंने चंदेल राजा परमर्दिदेव के खिलाफ भी विजय प्राप्त की थी। उनकी सबसे प्रसिद्ध लड़ाइयाँ मोहम्मद गौरी के साथ थीं:

तराइन की पहली लड़ाई (1191 ई.): इस युद्ध में पृथ्वीराज ने मोहम्मद गौरी को हराया।

तराइन की दूसरी लड़ाई (1192 ई.): इस निर्णायक युद्ध में पृथ्वीराज को पराजय का सामना करना पड़ा, जिसके बाद उन्हें बंदी बना लिया गया और बाद में उनकी मृत्यु हो गई।
