The 83rd Anniversary of Maharaja Gopeshwar Prasad Shahi
-----the generous donor of Gopeshwar College-----
March 7, 2015
It was for the first time in the history of Gopeshwar College, Hathwa, that since its establishment in 1956, the College celebrated the birth anniversary of its donor, Maharaja Bahadur Gopeshwar Prasad Shahi, the 104th Maharaja of Hathwa, who was kind and generous enough to donate almost 19 acres of land for the establishment of this College next to his palace.
Thanks to the efforts and vision of our Principal, Dr. Baikunth Pandey, who believes that such activities are necessary for the holistic development of an educational institution.
Dr Md S Ahmad proposed the name of the Principal as the President of the program, and Prof B D Mandal seconded in Toto. Prof J K Singh welcomed the guests and invited the dignitaries to pay homage to Maharaja Gopeshwar Prasad Shahi. Dr C P Singh presented the subject matter in detail and described how the generosity of the Maharaja helped this College established during an age when there was no institution of higher learning in the whole area.
Different speakers, recalling the days of yore, elaborated various aspects of the College and shared their memories. Most of the guests present on the occasion were the students of this College during sixties and seventies. Two of them were the students of the second batch.
Dr B Pandey, Principal, shared his vision in his presidential speech and pledged that he will leave no stone unturned in reviving the past glory of this College. Hathwa Raj’s Manager represented the Raj with his august presence. The three hours long program came to an end with the votes of thanks by Prof J K Singh.

Established in 1956, Gopeshwar College, Hathwa, a constituent unit of Jai Prakash University, Chapra, is situated in a lush green environment friendly campus on the land donated by the erstwhile Maharani Durgeshwari Devi, wife of Maharaja Gopeshwar Prasad Sahi of Hathwa Raj, the 104th Maharaja of Hathwa.
A view of the Hathwa Palace across the boundary adds to its scenic beauty. The college caters to the needs of those living within 15 to 20 km radius. It has recently seen a great increase in the number of girl students, and the students belonging to reserved categories. With strength of more than four thousand students, the college has always produced good results in different examinations; some of its students in one or the other subjects procure highest marks in the University as well.
Gopeshwar College has rich laboratories of Chemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology and Geography. The departments of Botany and Zoology are running in a newly built building. The college has a separate block of Social Sciences for the departments of Economics and Political Science. The college library is a rich resource of the books on History and Geography. It has a sizeable number of rare publications that is a valuable donation from the Hathwa Raj Library. Construction of its new building is under consideration.
Besides regular TDC courses in Arts and Science, the college also provides Postgraduate teachings in Economics and Political Science. The UGC sponsored Career & Counseling Cell, Coaching for Entry into Services (for SC/ST/OBC/Minorities), and Remedial Coaching are also functioning.
Our faculty members have supervised research works for the award of Ph.D. too. As a teaching community we are immensely proud of our gains and the growth in our infrastructure.
The college is all set to get itself evaluated by the NAAC peer team. The IEQA has already been granted acceptance. We are looking forward for help and assistance in this aspect from different stockholders of the college including the University and the Govt. of Bihar.
