Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India and among Hindu communities around the world. The festival signifies the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Diwali typically lasts for five days, and each day has its own significance and rituals.
1. Day of Cleansing ( ):
The celebration begins with Dhanteras, where people clean and decorate their homes. It is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, or utensils on this day.
2. Day of ( ):
Choti Diwali involves the symbolic victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. People light oil lamps and burst firecrackers to celebrate this triumph of good.
3. Main (Diwali):
On the main day of Diwali, families come together for puja (prayer rituals), exchange gifts, and indulge in festive meals. Homes are adorned with colorful rangoli, and the night sky is lit up with dazzling fireworks.
4. Day of Bonding ( ):
Govardhan Puja commemorates Lord Krishna's lifting of the Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers. Devotees prepare elaborate meals and share them with friends and family.
5. Day of Sibling Bond ( ):
The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters perform aarti for their brothers and pray for their well-being.
