Nalanda University, founded in the 5th century CE by Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I, was the world’s first great residential university — flourishing nearly 600 years before Oxford and 700 years before Paris. At its peak, it housed more than 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers, all living within its sprawling campus of monasteries, temples, and lecture halls.

The subjects taught reflected both Buddhist and secular knowledge traditions. The curriculum included Buddhist philosophy and logic (Hetuvidya), medicine (Chikitsa Vidya), grammar (Vyakarana), astronomy (Jyotisha), astrology, mathematics, and even arts and architecture. The entrance exam was famously tough, ensuring that only the most capable minds could enter Nalanda’s intellectual community.

The Chinese monk Xuanzang (Hsuan Tsang), who studied there in the 7th century CE, described Nalanda as a vibrant hub of learning with nine-storey libraries, housing hundreds of thousands of manuscripts. He wrote of intense debates, rigorous scholarship, and students arriving from across Asia — China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, and Central Asia. Nalanda, he said, was the heart of knowledge for the ancient world.

Tragically, in 1193 CE, Nalanda was destroyed by Bakhtiyar Khilji’s forces. Its vast libraries were set aflame, and legend says they burned for months, wiping out priceless manuscripts and silencing centuries of accumulated wisdom.

Today, Nalanda’s ruins in Bihar are a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a reminder of India’s ancient academic glory and a lesson on how fragile cultural treasures can be.
