अगर कभी सुबह-सुबह किसी पेड़ की ऊँची डाल से कोई आपको बेवजह ट्रिल, व्हिसल और मीठी ट्यून सुनाए…तो समझ जाना—ओरिएंटल मैगपाई रोबिन (Doyel/Dayal) अपनी छोटी-सी दुनिया का बड़ा-सा कॉन्सर्ट शुरू कर चुका है!
आज सुखद आश्चर्य से भर उठा जब सुबह तार सप्तक के पंचम में एक लंबी सीटी सुनायी दी। ऐसी तान सिर्फ़ बचपन में नानी के गाँव में सुनी थी। शुक्रिया पत्नी के उस अथक प्रयास का जिसकी वजह से हमारी छोटी सी बालकनी में हरियाली है और शक्रिया उन सभी लोगों का जिन्होंने हमारे घर के सामने आम का वृक्ष लगवाया। सामने पार्क भी है तो दूसरी मंज़िल पर स्थित मेरे कमरे से हरियाली का दृष्य किसी भी पर्यटन स्थल से अधिक खूबसूरत है। लेकिन एक ही कमी है की यहाँ चिड़ियों का कलरव नहीं है, उसकी जगह स्कूल बसों की घर्घर और आज के अल्फा मेल बच्चों की बचकानी थार गाड़ियों में थर्राते पंजाबी गानों की कर्कश ध्वनियाँ हैं जिनमें ताल नहीं धमकी की धमक होती है, चार शब्द होते हैं और मूल मुद्दा यह होता है कि शोर कितना ज़्यादा हो। ख़ैर तो ऐसे शोर के बीच रोबिन की आवाज़ प्रकृति का आशीष है । कैमरा निकाल कर फ़ौरन तस्वीर में क़ैद किया और फिर बनाया यह स्केच।

If, early one morning, from a high branch of a tree, someone suddenly treats you—without any reason—to trills, whistles, and sweet melodies… then know this: the Oriental Magpie Robin (Doyel/Dayal) has begun a grand concert of its tiny little world.

Today my morning was filled with a pleasant surprise when I heard a long, clear whistle in the pancham of the upper octave. Such a melody I had last heard only in childhood, in my grandmother’s village. Thanks are due to my wife’s tireless efforts, because of which our small balcony is full of greenery—and thanks also to all those who ensured that a mango tree was planted in front of our house. There is a park right opposite, so from my second-floor room the green view is more beautiful than any tourist destination.

Yet there is one shortcoming: there is no chorus of birds here. Instead, there is the grinding noise of school buses and the childish bravado of today’s so-called alpha-male kids—harsh Punjabi songs blaring from vibrating cars, sounds that have no rhythm, only intimidation; just four repeated words, and the sole point is how loud the noise can be.

Still, amid all this cacophony, the robin’s voice feels like a blessing from nature. I immediately took out my camera, captured it in a photograph, and then made this sketch.
