Solubility:

Solubility is the maximum amount of a solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature to form a stable solution.
For example, sugar dissolving in water.
Factors Affecting Solubility

1. Nature of Solute and Solvent
“Like dissolves like.”
Polar substances dissolve in polar solvents.
Non-polar substances dissolve in non-polar solvents.
Examples:
Salt dissolves in water.
Oil does not dissolve in water.
2. Temperature
For Solid Solutes:
Solubility usually increases with increase in temperature.
Example:
Sugar dissolves faster in hot water.
For Gases:
Solubility decreases with increase in temperature.
Example:
Cold drinks lose gas when heated.
3. Pressure
Pressure mainly affects gases dissolved in liquids.
Higher pressure increases solubility of gases.
Example:
Carbon dioxide is dissolved in soft drinks under high pressure.
4. Stirring (Agitation)
Stirring increases the rate of dissolving.
It helps fresh solvent come in contact with the solute.
5. Size of Solute Particles
Smaller particles dissolve faster because they have larger surface area.
Example:
Powdered sugar dissolves faster than sugar cubes.
