The Plan Special Needs Introductory Survey of Families with Special Needs is one of the first initiatives in India to examine how well families are prepared for the lifelong care of a child with disabilities. Covering areas such as financial planning, legal and estate planning, guardianship, child development, communication, and family preparedness, the survey highlights the significant planning gaps that many families continue to face. Its findings serve as an important benchmark for understanding the challenges, priorities, and support needs of special needs families, while providing valuable insights to help parents, professionals, policymakers, and service providers develop better long-term solutions for securing the future, dignity, and well-being of individuals with disabilities.

Key Findings from the Survey

76% of parents are not confident about their child's lifetime financial security.

90% of families have not prepared a Letter of Intent to guide future caregivers.

3 out of 4 families have not identified a future guardian for their child.

More than 80% of families remain committed to therapy and developmental interventions, reflecting strong parental dedication despite planning challenges.

The survey emphasizes the need for early financial planning, legal documentation, trusts, insurance review, and structured caregiving plans to ensure continuity of care throughout the child's lifetime.

This combination of insights demonstrates that while Indian families show exceptional commitment to their children's day-to-day development, long-term planning for financial security, guardianship, and future care remains an area requiring urgent attention. The survey provides a foundation for creating greater awareness and encouraging families to begin planning well before a crisis arises.

When integrated with a comprehensive estate plan, a family trust becomes more than a financial arrangement—it serves as a long-term legacy and care framework, ensuring that the child's quality of life and dignity remain protected for generations.

Most people think saving money in a bank account is enough.

But here's the reality: if your money grows at 3–4% while inflation is around 6%, you're actually losing purchasing power every year.

₹100 today may cost ₹106 tomorrow. If your money grows to only ₹104, you've fallen behind.

Financial independence isn't just about earning money—it's about making your money grow faster than inflation.

Save wisely. Invest thoughtfully. Let your money work for you.

It’s heartening to see such a strong emphasis on accessibility and the emotional needs of people with disabilities. The Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of India’s (CJI) recognition of these issues is a significant step forward. By highlighting that the real barriers are societal structures and not the disabilities themselves, they are advocating for a more inclusive and accessible environment for everyone.

Ensuring accessibility is indeed a fundamental human right, and it’s crucial for enhancing participation and inclusion in society. This verdict reinforces the importance of creating environments that accommodate all individuals, allowing them to build relationships and fully engage in community life.

How do you feel about this development? Do you think it will lead to meaningful changes in society?
