After many many years I heard the bell ring to mark the end of a class and the beginning of another. Students in uniforms and id cards all around the campus. It felt different. It actually felt nice. What nostalgia is this?My recent trip to made me realise how I miss uniforms and school bells.
Most of you would vote for colleges and universities to not have a uniform but I believe there's a finer spirit of discipline and equality that this protocol instills in everyone. Many universities have a dress code but students know how to bend and twist it, much to teachers' scorn (not that this scorn matters). I am not against a colourful campus full of well dressed vibrantly attired youngsters. But when the brands and labels of clothes create a invincible line of discrimination, that's what bothers me. And it happens. Way more than you might imagine. That's where the uniform comes to rescue.
And bells! This sudden chime can surely knock you out of your slumber. But isn't that we teachers want. That students and ourselves don't feel sleepy, at least not during class hours. Most days during classes I lose track of time when I am in the thick of my explanations and discussions. And the next teacher comes and waits at the door, sometimes knocking, sometimes silent, lest my flow is broken. Bells are a nice way of interrupting. Bells are sharp and impartial. They do not differentiate between good classes and bad classes. All classes end with a ring.
Missing school so much. Missing my teachers so much. Missing my friends. Ah! This spiral is sickening.
Thanks for allowing this space to reflect on my memories of schools, bells and uniforms.
Do you miss school bells and uniforms too?
