ABOUT COMPREHENSION
COMPREHENSION means to understand something.
SOME TIPS----
1..First try to understand the whole MATTER.
2..Before answering the question…concentrate on the words like WHAT,WHERE,WHEN,WHY,HOW etc…
3..Your answer should be in the SAME TENSE as is used in the QUESTION.
4..Your answer should be in the CORRECT and COMPLETE format.
5..Never use DIRECT NARRATION in answer.
6..If you are asked to give the TITLE for the MATTER, give the TITLE together with the reason behind it.
Precis is an art of condensation or abridgement of any written or spoken matter in fewer words.
HOW TO WRITE A PRECIS…..
1..Try to use your own words to put the matter.Never pick the same sentence from the given matter.
2..Always use THIRD PERSON(HE,SHE IT,THEY) in the précis.Never use FIRST PERSON(I,WE).This is because the matter is not yours.
3..PRECIS must be written in the same tense as is used in the MATTER.
4..Always use INDIRECT NARRATION in PRECIS.
5..PRECIS should be ONE-THIRD of the length of MATTER.
6..Avoid FIGURES OF SPEECH(SIMILE &METAPHOR) while writing the PRECIS.
7..Never use QUOTATION in PRECIS.
8..Use METHOD OF SUBSTITUTION (with the help of CONJUNCTION) to minimize the number of words.
9..Avoid REPETITION OF IDEA/WORDS in PRECIS.
10..Always use ACTIVE VOICE in PRECIS.
11..Never use the name of AUTHOR/WRITER/POET …In place of it write THE AUTHOR/THE WRITER/THE POET in the précis.
12..write the number of words(USED IN THE PRECIS) in the RIGHT SIDE END of the PRECIS.
MOST OF ALL….NEVER FORGET TO WRITE “THE TITLE” ON THE TOP OF THE PRECIS.

Much, many, a lot of, lots of etc
We can use numbers with countable nouns. For example, we can say two girls and six eggs.
Many and much
Sometimes it is not possible or necessary to give an exact number like this. Then we use a quantifier like many.
• There were many children in the park. (We don’t know the exact number of children.)
• There are many mangoes on the tree.
• She has many friends.
We cannot use numbers with uncountable nouns. For example, we can’t say two water or three honey.
However, we can give an idea of amount or quantity by using the word much with uncountable nouns. Note that much is mainly used in questions and negative sentences.
• How much money do you have?
• There isn’t much food left.
Some
Some can be used with countable and uncountable nouns.
• I have bought some eggs. (Here we use some with the countable noun eggs.)
• There is some water in the bottle. (Here we use some with the uncountable noun water.)
Some is mainly used in affirmative sentences. In negative sentences, we use any.
• Is there any water in the bottle?
A lot of / lots of
A lot of / lots of can also be used with both countable and uncountable nouns. Note that there is hardly any difference between a lot of and lots of. A lot of and lots of are mainly used in affirmative sentences. In questions and negatives we express the same idea using much and many.
• I have watched lots of English films.
• I haven’t watched many English films. (More natural than ‘I haven’t watched lots of English films.’)
• She has been giving me a lot of trouble. (Here we use a lot of with the uncountable noun trouble.)
