The Programme for Research & Inquiry by Students in Mathematics (PRISM) is an intensive six-week summer maths programme at IIT Guwahati for Indian secondary students aged 15-18.

PRISM India 2026 at IIT Guwahati has come to a very successful end! In our last week, we were honored with a beautiful talk by Prof. Rupam Barman, Professor in the Department of Mathematics &
Associate Dean of Academic Courses at IIT Guwahati. Prof. Barman gave an extremely illuminating talk on both the classical and modern study of partitions. We are especially grateful that the PRISM students were able to interact with and see the mathematics of a “homegrown” mathematician, who completed his Bachelor’s at Cotton College in Guwahati and his PhD at IIT Guwahati. We hope his talk and mathematical career inspires our students to make their mark in the communities they came from. Thank you Prof. Barman!

Last week at PRISM India, we welcomed Dr. Gaurav Patil from the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute. He gave a very engaging lecture on sum free subsets, which led to many interesting observations and conjectures from our students (and even a follow-up problem set!). In addition, he gave a colloquium on his research on counting number fields, a very exciting topic for the counsellors as well as students and faculty from IITG. As part of our weekly advice panel, we thoroughly enjoyed his stories and insights from his own mathematical journey, particularly on how to communicate mathematics via writing. We also appreciated how much time he spent and enthusiasm he had with the students and counsellors, whether challenging the students in their own mathematics, talking about his own mathematics research, answers questions or giving guidance. We are especially happy he enjoyed one of our non-math fun activities, participating in a collaborative art project with the other students! We’re really glad we got the chance to spend time with him and learn from his experiences and we’re sure this will be one of the formative math experiences for many of our students this summer!

Last week, PRISM India was excited to welcome Professor Kumar Murty, Director of the Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI) and a professor at the University of Toronto. His talk on work related to the irreducibility of polynomials of the form x^n+x+a was highly engaging for the students, and he also gave a wonderful colloquium to our counselors and the rest of the IITG math department about two battling conjectures of Euler and Grothendieck that contradict one another, and which Prof. Murty thinks will end up being true. We were also very fortunate to watch Prof. Murty’s favourite movie “Kung Fu Panda" together, which offered lots of good lessons on how to stick through hard problems when you're stuck. The students also really enjoyed talking to Prof. Murty on the variety of ways mathematics can be used to solve the world’s problems, another area of expertise for him. The entire programme had an extremely enriching time with Prof. Murty and appreciate the opportunity to host him!

Week 3 started off with our visiting mathematician of the week, Prof. Tapas Chatterjee, associate professor at IIT Ropar. He gave a wonderful talk to our students on the history of numbers, where he connected irrationality with the periodicity of continued fractions, gave a geometric proof of the irrationality of the square root of two, and posed some open problems on transcendental numbers for the students to think about. In addition, he gave an enlightening counsellor colloquium in the IIT Guwahati maths department on the zeta function. He was warmly welcomed and felicitated by the respected faculties of IIT Guwahati, including Profs. Sukanta Pati, Swaroop Nandan Bora, Anupam Saikia and Rupam Barman. We are really grateful to Prof. Chatterjee for his energy and jokes and his interactions with the PRISM India community.

After a successful first week, Week 2 of PRISM India kicked off with the first guest lecture of the programme, delivered by Prof. Jyothi Krishnan (IIT Gandhinagar) on the topic "Set and Math."

The guest lecture happened after a game night introducing Set. Students were able to experience and engage with this deeply mathematical game that was initially invented without an explicitly mathematical origin!

Many of our students had never heard of or played Set before, and the lecture cleverly utilized the game to introduce them to all sorts of mathematics, including geometry over finite fields.

Afterwards, the students enjoyed asking Prof. Krishnan many questions over tea, and the questions continued into an advice panel on overcoming imposter syndrome as a mathematician. We are always amazed by the rich and diverse questions our students have.

Thanks to Prof. Krishnan for giving the inaugural guest lecture, and to all the members of IITG who attended the lecture in addition to the PRISM community!

We are pleased to announce the launch of PRISM India's inaugural summer on the 20th of May, 2026 at IIT Guwahati.

The programme was inaugurated by the honorable Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati.

PRISM India would also like to thank Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Dean of Administration, and Prof. S. Natesan, HOD of Mathematics, for their warm welcome. The local programme coordinators are Prof. Sukanta Pati and Prof. Swaroop Nandan Bora from the Department of Mathematics.

PRISM (Programme for Research & Inquiry by Students in Mathematics) officially kicks off at IIT Guwahati — bringing together pre-university students between 15-18 years of age from across India for six weeks of deep mathematical exploration.

Designed to build critical thinking and a strong foundation for future mathematical work, PRISM balances rigour with creativity in a collaborative, experimental environment. The Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati has partnered with the 101 Foundation to make this fully-funded residential programme possible — ensuring that financial barriers never stand between a curious mind and great mathematics.

The programme Director is Prof. Ila Varma, University of Toronto.

The IITG Coordinators are Prof. Sukanta Pati and Prof. Swaroop Nandan Bora.

The Institute wishes the students and hopes that the journey is joyful, challenging, and deeply rewarding. 🔢✨
