The day when it becomes unbearable to withstand is now!
Imagine the curiosity mixed joy of two young kids barely in their teens charmed by the serene voices that they built up a mind-image and kept on idolizing for the days to come.
That was the majestic Sudh Kalyan sung by our revered Guru-Dway
Hardly had we siblings known that destiny would put us under their guidance one day.
Then was a scenario in this part of the world wherein we had neither access nor wherewithal to behold quality concerts of Indian Classical Music; radio and a few of the recordings were our only resort to learn and grow.
Years later when I approached Guruji I still get goosebumps pondering and wondering about the fact of my courage approaching the Man Himself.
Still lingers His benign Voice when after patiently listening to my younger sister Subhra He said "เค เคธเคเฅเคเฅ?" our joy knew no bounds.
It feels as if He is there correcting our erring fancies and would exclaim: 'เคนเฅเคถ เคธเฅ เคเคฐเฅ'- be ever conscious with your music.
Yes, they would cast a spell on their listeners and yet be so conscious of their presentation.
The smooth glide over the octaves is so synonymous to them. Once I asked Him "Guruji how is it that you in spite of your baritone try to mellow down when male voices generally become burdened with too much weight later in life"? I felt silly of myself asking but not Him as He humbly replied: "Good observation. This is my research."
Always awed by his Tihais I once asked how does He do it so effortlessly! He replied: "Because I'm surrendered. If you surrender yourself out and out it would eventually reflect in your presentations."
The Madhyalay has been established by Guruji apart from Ati-Vilambit and Drut layas in Vocal Music. His saying "It's a tougher territory to venture into Madhyalay for long enough."
The use of Tanpura has been exemplified by Guruji. The silence between notes, phrases are so well marked up it feels as if He created stairs and kept ascending or descending at will.
The Taans, everyone does that but unlike them. The avroh Taans would perfectly land before the Mukhda without any patch work.
The Taals that He chose for a particular evening reflected the Man He was! Perfectly carved Chhands according to the nature of a particular Taal. Name a Taal and He has a Bandish ready at hand.
I can go on and on with immense possibilities to scrounge across each of His specialisations that would require lifetimes of specialised research yet cannot gauge the simplicity and humility of this Great Man!
Surely he is a true Sangitajna, yes, as by definition 'Sangit' is a threefold combination of 'Geetam', 'Vadyam' and 'Nrityam' that was so prominent in Guruji the Gitikar/Gayak, Guruji the Vadyakar and Guruji the Nrityakar.
I'll treasure each of your divine discourses that evokes nothing but a zeal for perfection.
Once You were kind enough to share a Padhant of a Paran that took my sleep for a couple of days, the voice, the resonance and Bhaav that evoked a curiosity in me 'How does He do it?' or 'This is the way Bols ought to be read'. And this is yet again the moment when-
my eyes are dry,
for it cannot cry-
can't bid you bye.......
