All 22 states of matter.. Most states of matter are very rare and only occurs at very low or very high temperatures. The first four states are called classical states of matter because they're common in nature, and other states are called modern states of matter. The classical states of matter are usually summarized as: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. Within the 20th century, increased understanding of the more exotic properties of matter resulted within the identification of many additional states of matter, none of which are observed in normal conditions.
