In a major moment of pride for Gauhati University (GU), a selection of photographs capturing the campus’s rich biodiversity has garnered high-profile appreciation. The wildlife photographs, captured by Dr. Arunav Baruah, a faculty member at the Department of Communication and Journalism (DCJ), were recently shared online by Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister, Jayanta Malla Baruah.

Dr. Baruah, who also serves as the Faculty Coordinator of the university’s Shutter Point Photography Club, documented the thriving and often unseen wildlife that shares space with the university’s bustling academic environment. The Minister’s public appreciation has brought widespread recognition to both Dr. Baruah’s exceptional visual storytelling and the university’s vibrant natural heritage.

We are delighted to announce ENVISION GU: Nature Through Your Lens, a Photography & Reel Competition being organized on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026 by the Department of Communication & Journalism, Gauhati University, in collaboration with Shutter Point Photography Club.

Theme: Environment and Biodiversity of Gauhati University

🎥 Reels (30–90 seconds)

* Biodiversity of Gauhati University

Submission Guidelines

* Open to all participants.
* Entries must be original and created by the participant.
* Basic editing is permitted; AI-generated content is not allowed.
* Reels must be in vertical format (9:16).
* Participants may submit up to three photographs and one reel.
* A brief caption (maximum 50 words) should accompany each entry.

Recognition
🏆 Best Three Photographs and Best Three Reels will receive Digital Certificates of Merit and will be featured on the official platforms of Shutter Point Photography Club and the Department of Communication & Journalism, Gauhati University.

We were honoured to welcome young wildlife photographer and conservationist Pranoy Mahanta to our department today for an interactive session on wildlife conservation, research, and community engagement.

He highlighted the importance of photography as a powerful tool for conservation, environmental awareness, and ecological documentation, explaining how visual storytelling can inspire communities to protect biodiversity and fragile ecosystems like Behali Wildlife Sanctuary.

His insightful interaction encouraged students to develop a deeper sense of environmental responsibility, conservation awareness, and appreciation for nature through media and photography.
