Standard Hydrogen Electrode (Standard) It is made of platinised platinum electrode. For this, a thin sheet of platinum was placed in chloroplatinic acid and a direct electric current (d.c.) was passed through it and a thin layer of platinum-black was deposited on its surface. This platinum sheet is connected to a mercury wire (Figure 3.6) already saturated with pure H₂ gas at atmospheric pressure. Pure H₂ gas at 1 atm is now bubbled onto the platinum-black electrode.
