The story of Mohan Bhargav and Charanpur is very significant given the state of the country and ongoing debate on a Secular and United INDIA 🇮🇳
A true patriot’s journey; Swades was Mohan’s search for warmth, his search for home. It dealt with real life problems of real people - hunger, poverty, lack of electricity and more. A few problems that we still face as a developing country. showed Shah Rukh Khan, Mohan Bhargava, as a successful NRI who had returned to his homeland - Charanpur, India, to meet his Kaveri Amma.
This movie was all about little moments, right from the beginning. Be it Kaveri Amma pampering Mohan, him exploring villages & meeting families, the telescope night with children or his final realization; we still remember each little moment which made our hearts melt. Of course there were huge moments too - Mohan diligently working to bring water to the village and him deciding to come back to his homeland. Meanwhile, we all loved his relationship with Gita - beautiful and serene, the goodness of which led to his eventual transformation.
Still hear ‘Yeh Taara Woh Taara’ play out as soon as you read it? Yes, same.
Without being preachy, something about the movie managed to instill a feeling of responsibility and belongingness in us. No guns, no wars and no violence. Pure, unfiltered love for the country and its people.
With every small, significant scene, Swades cleared all our prejudices and ingrained a feeling of love for our nation.
Through Mohan, we saw our farmers get through their troubles, work hard and celebrate, as a whole. We evolved with him. We felt every emotion he felt. We cried, we laughed and we celebrated. Swades was the story of every Indian returning back to his true roots, to his loved ones.
And as rightly said by Mohan - we’re not the best country, but we can work hard towards becoming one of the best countries. It was not a movie, it was every Indian’s journey.
