Since 1974, 5th June is celebrated as World Environment Day. The purpose of the celebration is to engage all stakeholders in an effort to save the mother earth from the unsustainable practices of using natural resources. We understand that we as a human species are passing through a critical time. We are losing ecosystems, habitat, species at an alarming speed. Experts claim that in every three seconds, the world loses enough forest to cover a football pitch, besides we lost half of the world's wetlands over the last century only. Forest, Wetlands are an important ecosystem that holds a variety of species which makes the world a living space. We understand that this kind of ecosystem does not come overnight, it takes hundreds of years of natural interactions and evolution. Thus, protecting it from further degradation and reversing the damage and restoration of an already lost ecosystem is important.
The theme for this year World Environment Day is Ecosystem restoration. Consistent with the theme Dr. Bharat Kumar Pradhan, Community Leader, Friends for Future, International have initiated a campaign to sensitize the people of Sikkim and the World about the urgent importance of conserving the Riverine ecosystem of Sikkim which is being degraded at high speed.
IMFS Sikkim will participate in the campaign of saving the motherland from unsustainable exploitation. It is the obligation of all humans to take initiative to protect nature from unsustainable exploitation.
